Hi,
I just had a session with YOU, which updated something in Thunderbird
(3.1.8) and I lost a feature I liked.
I’m used to right click on the left panel, where the novell nntp forum
account is, and click on “get messages”. It would do just that for all
subforums, and change the color of all those that had new messages, so that
I could go there and see what was new.
Now it does the same, but it doesn’t change the colors. All folders show in
black.
Is this a new “feature”?

I see now that the small icon (5 mm) of each folder changes: those with new
message have a little yellow star or sun. I would prefer the color change…

i would prefer more devs who would stop believing that ‘change’ and
‘progress’ are interchangeable words…
especially not when the change is not programmatic but cosmetic… and
simply tinkers with user expectations and work-flow habits…
don’t worry, in some future year some dev will “innovate” Thunderbird
by bringing back the color change you like…
but unfortunately, it will probably flash…or spin…or
twinkle…or spawn a choreographed dance around the screen in a 3D
holographic heightened “user experience” of the prospect of exciting
communications awaiting opening…

Gosh…!
I was going to say that by that time I’ll probably be beyond caring about
computers in an old people care home :-p - but then what you say might come
earlier than we think possible. We will then have to ask for help of a kind
nephew of about 12 yrs, because we will no longer be able to handle the
psychic mouse :-p

I wonder if this is handled in a “theme”, and how do we customize a theme :-?

I personally wish people would realize that NNTP is just a
communication protocol and that anything you see in an NNTP reader,
such as Thunderbird (which is what this thread is about) is just a
function of the reader and not anything the admins here did that
magically changes formats of text within an NNTP reader.
I guess we all have our wishes.

you apparently thought i was writing about something that a forum’s
admin had done when i was in fact writing about what the Thunderbird
devs did…
read the thread again, without bristling up…

Maybe you want just to install a new theme (I think there are about 74 on the ‘official’ page probably more elsewhere)?
-
Choose one from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/themes/
-
Download the program (extention=*.xpi // real theme=.jar) by a mouse right-click on the download link and choose to save (do not open or it will be trying to get installed in firefox
).
-
Open Thunderbird > Tools > Add-ons > Extensions // Themes
-
In the Extensions // Themes window/tab, click the “Install…” button down on the left, search and select to the downloaded theme program (name-of-the-extensions-like-theme.xpi //name.of.the.real.theme.jar). Click the Open button to install the theme.
wait, click (trust), click, click [or something like it], “Restart Thunderbird”
-
If not happy -> go to 0.
-
Have a lot of fun!

Clearly DD was not talking about changes in the forum, but changes in
thunderbird as reader of nntp, obviously made by the Th. people.

I was rather thinking of myself changing one, wondering if there is an editor.

But it is an alternative, thanks.

Uff… too many, and I don’t see how they display what I want. I don’t feel
too enterprising tonight.

Apparently it is a new feature, yes. Intentional change “because of
accessibility”.

Well, what do you think? Just updated to Thunderbird 24.1.0, and the
feature is back: folders with new messages display the name in bold
blue. Folders with unread messages are bold black, and those fully read,
are plain black.
