Thunderbird 3.1 wants password three times - at least!

I’ve upgraded(?) to TB3.1 from the Mozilla repo and instead of a single
panel for the password, I get at least 3. The record so far is 6! Going
back to 3.0.5 returns to a single panel. I need to stick with 3.1 as a
parallel upgrade to Lightning 1.0b2 means 1.0b1 will not work.

Any idea how to get back to a single password entry?
