Three new install problems

I have a brand new install of 11.3, with all the updates, on a cleaned system, following some hdd and cable problems.

So far three problems have surfaced:-

  1. Dolphin doesn’t see and hard disks other than the root hdd. They appear on the left side in the list, but cannot be accessed as suse seems to have chosen not to mount them.I need them because they have my backup data on them.

  2. At each bootup, I have manually to reset the required screen resolution. I need to prevent it defaulting to the wrong resolution every time.

  3. I cannot now see my Windows workgroup at all. This is in stark contrast to another distro I’ve tried which found it and set everything up automatically. The workgroup has one WinXP machine on cable via a router, plus one Win7 machine via router and wifi link. I guessit failed to sort out smb.conf or something??

Before I mess around too much and spoil things I’d sure appreciate getting these aspects sorted out. :frowning:

I can help you with 1.

Are the Partitions listed in fstab?

cat /etc/fstab

If not you should give them an entry, either with Yast Partitioner or see:
FSTAB - Editing Manually

To help answer number 2:
What graphics card do you have? If you have ATi/NVIDIA graphics card are you using the closed source driver? How are you manually setting the required screen at each bootup?

generally it is best to put each problem into it own thread…caf is
helping with your number 1, and i suggest you being a new thread in
this forum for number 2, give it a descriptive subject like maybe:
screen resolution does not stick through the next boot…

and, in that post explain what openSUSE version, and DE you use, as
well as your graphics adapter and driver you are using…

number 3 should go in the networking forum
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/network-internet/
and, again tell your OS/DE etc…

it is good to read first, then ask, then wait for answers (if you
can’t find them yourself)

Re No. 2:- I have an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (0x0322) with 2D driver nouveau and 3D driver nouneau Gallium (7.8.2) according to the system informatiom I get. I’ve seen no warning messages.

I’m setting the display resolution using the normal system settings facility, choosing Display.

Again, with my other linux OS I have no problem with the same setting sticking through new bootups.

Thank you. I have a copy of an fstab which works with another OS, so I’ll start by using that as a guide to what’s needed.

you probably should begin reading here http://tinyurl.com/2vsv4rh
which explains how you can generate an xorg.conf file that the system
will then use in subsequent boots to pick the display you wish

if your other linux was exactly like openSUSE what would be the sense
of there being two different distributions?

i don’t know how your other system chooses to fix the display from one
boot to the next…perhaps there is already an xorg.conf file in
that other distro which will work in openSUSE…or not.
