I installed openSuSE 11.4 Milestone 6 a couple of days ago and have two gripes
with the KDE desktop. This has KDE version 4.5.95 (RC2).
Upon starting, whether from cold boot or restart, the “Mail Notification
Properties” popup appears. I’ve searched through “Configure Desktop” but
haven’t been able to find how to turn it off. I don’t use the KDE mail program
(kmail) and don’t want to be notified about new messages. How can I turn this
annoyance off?
Is there a way (as in Winblows) to turn the sound off for ALL notifications
without having to turn off every single “play sound” button on every single
program, EASILY at a single click? Winblows at least allows one to click on
“no sounds” for system notifications and still have audio available.
Is there a way to turn off the VERY annoying buzzer sound
that occurs in some programs when bad keyboard input occurs (such as trying to
delete beyond/before a fill-in box? It annoys my wife when she’s sleeping and
I’m working at the keyboard.
For 1) Again, under Application and System Notifications, select ‘Event Source’ and locate ‘KMail’ (or any other applicable application), and disable any notifications you do not wish to have displayed.

not sure, but it may not be either kmail or other mail client…it may
be systemmail* destined to ‘root’…

You need to clarify this a little more. We’ve been left to assume a little here. As DenverD has suggested, this may be a system mail notification for ‘root’, but maybe you have it configured to forward mail to a user account as well perhaps? If this is the case, you’ll have an entry in /etc/aliases (with your username). It’s easy to remove if not wanted. In any case there is an event source called ‘Local system message service’ (refer Applications and System Notifications again )that may be responsible here.
Thanks for the replies! Problems 2 & 3 have been resolved.
Problem 2 (turn off all system sounds - except buzz in 3 below) by opening “Start > Configure Desktop > Notifications >Player Settings” and clicking “no audio”
Problem 3 (annoying loud buzz on errors) by opening the mixer applet, adding “beep” to it, and setting it to mute.
Problem 1 turns out to be a GTK problem which I’m still working on.
