I came across this a couple of weeks ago:

Call for Ray Bradbury to be honoured with internet error message | Books | guardian.co.uk

The IETF proposal can be found here. All I can say is that I absolutely love this idea. Quite a fitting tribute to Mr. Bradbury.

but, i don’t think the 451 error should be optional…internet purveyors
who withhold info based on a legal requirement should be required to
provide blocked users the legal basis for the withhold or provide the
requested data…

for example: currently the USA’s Public Broadcasting System
<pbs.org> refuses to stream NOVA documentaries
<http://video.pbs.org/program/nova/> to my location due to
“rights restrictions” but that fact is masked behind their ‘error’
message which claims a “technical problem”…see

Which is exactly the type of thing this error code is supposed to address. However, you hit the nail on the head as for the main problem. As with other parts of the HTTP protocol, servers can easily provide the wrong status code or omit information, and there’s not much the client can do about it. I think where it comes in most handy is for companies that are coerced into censoring themselves, as Google does in certain countries. It would likely be in their best interest to show there is a restriction and the legalese behind it. However, areas that use firewalls to block content may not choose to use that status code, regardless of HTTP standard. After all, it’s not like we can send the internet police after them

eventually the Federation’s Communications Police will dispatch a star
cruiser to the location of violators and . . .

Now *that’s *an idea! However, if they are going after violators of the HTTP protocol, I suggest they target Microsoft HQ first. >:)

you can bet your bottom dollar that that HQ will not exist when the
Federation is sending out star cruisers… (but a descendent of
Linux/BSD/*nix will be embedded in every phaser and comm device)

with not a Window[tm] in sight.

I clicked the link (I am located in Germany) and the video plays.

PC: oS 12.1 x86_64 | i7-2600@3.40GHz | 16GB | KDE 4.8.4 | GeForce GT 420
ThinkPad E320: oS 12.1 x86_64 | i3@2.30GHz | 8GB | KDE 4.8.4 | HD 3000
eCAFE 800: oS 12.1 i586 | AMD Geode LX 800@500MHz | 512MB | KDE 3.5.10

Thanks that’s good to know. I wonder why it didn’t work for me. Maybe my German proxy IP was somehow discovered.

@dd
Thanks for checking. That means “we’re sorry but the video cannot be viewed from your country”.

Nothing to say. Most probably above discussion make a good result.
