Things I dislike in openSUSE - Creative Purpose only!

For creative/educational purposes only, I want to make a list with things I don`t like in openSUSE… maybe one day someone will see this post and will think that could be used in creative ways…

First of all, I used so many distros… I started with Ubuntu, than Linux Mint, than openSUSE, than Mandriva, CentOs, Fedora, Zenwalk, Debian, BSD, PcLinux, and olso OpenSolaris… I used so many because I`m in search of the best free OS for myself…
Every distro has + and -… some more, some less… but after 1 year I turned again to use openSUSE… because it is the most MATURE, STABLE, PROFESSIONAL and LIGHT distro I ever used.

But how I`ve told you, I used also other distros after openSUSE, and these are my reasons:

(making my list with things I don`t like in openSUSE)

– too bloated; too many things all together seams too confusing sometimes, specially for a new openSUSE user… I thing YaST is great but should be organised better and more clearly…

-- **online update/ software refreshing** is soooo slow and many times becomes a frustrating experience... it is way too slow... it`s a pain when you have added some extra repos... and Packman repo is a pain in the a..!

This is my list for the moment, and I think I`m speaking about serious and important problems…

I dont care if openSUSE takes longer to load than other distros, or thats more “slow” or “less responsive” than other distros too… I see that openSUSE works in serious directions, offering serious options/facilities, so keep up with this nice work friends!

Umm…
Let me make a prediction: :X…No, better not.

No prizes for guessing what I think!

That might be related to issues on your end or possible wrong mirror being chosen - for me adding a repository takes a few seconds and even adding Packman took less than 15 secs (refreshing it takes a few seconds every now and then, since it does it in the background I don’t even notice it).

The repository system relies heavily on your internet connection, if you have poor/slow connection it will be invariably slow. Perhaps changing how the repository updates are delivered to the clients might improve it - however making an incremental system is a “little” tricky.

I agree with Chrysantine - actually zypper / YaST are pretty fast even (not only compared to pre-11.0-Versions, way back then YaST was really painfully slow). I have noticed that the belgian Packman-mirror is often slow or not responding at all, so switch to another one. IPv6 might also be an issue (look in the HowTo-subforum to learn how to switch it off in 11.2, it won’t work via YaST!).

YaST being bloated… well, the idea of YaST is to collect pretty much any administrative task under one hood, and a lot of these tasks can not be managed the intuitive way. They have to be learned (and I found YaST to be a good tool to learn…).

Okay, one wish I have: please undo those terrible user/root-presets which are default since 11.0, meaning root having the same password as the first user and automatic logins being enabled - both settings are pretty insecure, they should only be set if the user wants it, not as default.

the thing i dislike the most about openSUSE is i’m just not as young
as i used to be…

and, when i wear my openSUSE T-Shirt i still attract two women at a time…

and, i just too old for two at time…

almost…

Nah!

and, i just too old for two at time…

Get yourself a Vibrating Mouse and make sure you know how to press all the buttons!

Just stick to the first and always keep an eye to the second just in case you lose the first.:stuck_out_tongue:

Gosh, since when is prepubertal bullsh¡t like this funny? Get a life, guys…

Any comments on the topic?

We tire easily of topics covered over and over, especially when it just doesn’t happen to us. Selfish I know, but the OP gave the impression it was a light hearted chit chat.

Seriously, just doesn’t happen as described and in any case, the 2 main points raised were rather vague and non-specific.

For IPv6 issues, this might worth a look as well https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556299

(Since it seems like libzypp call aria2, read the comments.)

agree…nothing in this overly redundant thread except it is one more
place to moan and complain…while the designated places to do so
(which might actually result in openSUSE progress) remain under used:

http://en.opensuse.org/Fate
http://en.opensuse.org/Submitting_Bug_Reports
http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate#Mailing_Lists
http://en.opensuse.org/Communicate#Instant_Chat_.28IRC.29

oh! and, one other exception: i intend personally to return here often
to ponder the thoughtful and sage advice to ‘Get a life’…what a
novel idea, is it from Novell?

I was serious. I am open for humour even if it’s sexist, but still feel free to point out if a joke is just… lame. If you don’t like a topic, let it die instead of spreading homosocial strutting.

I had slow loading of repo when starting the update app. I improved it by setting a different mirror for the repos. So instead of …download.opensuse.org/… I tried different mirrors and used that. The same with packman. I found packman on the skynet server to be slow so set it to a mirror and it’s better. Just experiment a little.

i’m serious also…

this forum is described as “General Chit-Chat A friendly place to
converse about your adventures with openSUSE, your weekend, your boss,
your new car, and generally stuff that doesn’t fit somewhere else (and
we must ask: PLEASE do not post help questions here)”

if you notice there is no prohibition against attempts at humor either
in this forum’s description or the FAQ
<http://forums.opensuse.org/faq.php>…

so, i might respond: if you don’t like my humor you are well within
your right to say so–go ahead–but you might also consider letting
the the thread die instead of spreading your pronouncements of the
suitability of mine, or any other general-chit-chat here!

i must admit i’m a little confused by, and wonder what specifically is
your problem with my humor attempt?

see, i’m not smart enough to know what comprises “homosocial
strutting”…i tried to learn about it but in the universe open to
Google’s eye i found exactly one reference, yours:
<http://www.google.com/search?q=“homosocial+strutting”>

so, i look up “homosocial” as i don’t know exactly what that means
anyway (you must be educated, huh?) and learn: “In sociology,
homosociality describes same-sex relationships that are not of a
romantic or sexual nature, such as friendship, mentorship or others.”
<http://www.answers.com/topic/homosociality>

fact is i can’t yet tell if you are patting me on the back or hurling
an insult…so, i keep reading and find: “Homosociality, by
definition, implies neither heterosexuality nor homosexuality. For
example, a heterosexual male who prefers to socialize with men may be
considered a homosocial heterosexual. The term is often used by
feminists to emphasize aspects of solidarity between males, although
other feminists identify a close link between female homosociality,
feminism and lesbian desire …” <ibid>

and wonder if maybe you are a feminist whose humor meter is unduly
influenced by today’s lunar clock and therefore just felt like it was
perfect time to whack-a-heterosexual-male down with your mallet…

or what?

what if i’m a predatory lesbian and was “strutting” about being too
old to be real happy about accidentally picking up two at a time when
i wear my openSUSE T-shirt <http://shop.opensuse.org/>…

would THAT (equally improbable scenario) make you giggle?

hope you feel better soon…and keep up with your sociology
studies…i find ‘human nature’ fascinating and never tire of trying
to figure out what motivates folks to post in the ways they do…

palladium

Hm, this is serious… am I correct to assume it is appropriate to answer your questions? I hope these are not yet another rhetorical twist.

First: I do apologize for admonishing you for being offtopic - in this subforum this actually can not happen, I agree. I am used to simply hit the “New Posts”-link and browse through the most recent posts while not caring for the section a thread was posted. Again: sorry.

…] but you might also consider letting
the the thread die instead of spreading your pronouncements of the
suitability of mine …]

I considered it, but since I totally believe in the idea of social control (also and especially in forums), I prefer to keep that up. Don’t take it too personal; I really like your “style”, you seem to be quite clever and witty, but wouldn’t make me a hypocrite if I see something that disturbs me and just shut up about it?

i must admit i’m a little confused by, and wonder what specifically is
your problem with my humor attempt?

There is no “problem”, my comment was referring to the mentioned post only, not your general way of being funny.

While I speak and understand english fairly well, I am far from being perfect; often I can not find an adequate english match for a german word, which lets me mix various strategies such as googling, webstering or just guessing. The actual word I was looking for was “männerbündlerisch”, an adjective which describes the kind of buddy-behaviour men only dare to show when no member of the opposite sex is present. I do not criticize that in general (it’s just natural), but find the humour such behaviour usually breeds really disturbing, since it cements (←good example for “guessing”) certain viewpoints which in my opinion should not be spread anymore. I do not try to forbid such kind of humour, but I still want to raise my voice and say “Hey, this is so lame, dudes…”. That’s pretty much all, there’s no real reason for you to feel attacked, not to mention insulted - it wasn’t that bad a joke. I have heard much worse.

and wonder if maybe you are a feminist whose humor meter is unduly
influenced by today’s lunar clock and therefore just felt like it was
perfect time to whack-a-heterosexual-male down with your mallet…

Oh, does that tiny piece of critique appears like a mallet to you…? Interesting. Nah seriously & again: I didn’t mean to start a fight, okay? I do also understand the basic concept of humour and try to follow it as good as a broody german could.

btw: “feminist”, is that an insult for you? Just asking…

Well you are not a lesbian, and even if so, the joke would be just as lame. Some jokes get better the more you twist certain expectations, but some jokes just stay the same.

As pointed out, you got me totally wrong. I am more on the mellow side actually. I do notice that you do seem to feel insulted pretty easily often… But that’s not the topic at hand.

i enjoyed your note! i do wish i was as good at any other language as
you are with english…i am humbled (really)…

i understand…and, we are hereby ‘smooth’

correct, you have an obligation to defend your ideals/basic
underpinnings…however, if you drag the net with the idea of
defending your beliefs at every turn, you are gonna be one tired
puppy…and, will not have achieved much in the end…

ok, i understand…yep, i also take up the banner of gender
equality…and, one way is trying to treat all equally…so, what you
don’t know is i’m as likely to say exactly the same thing in both all
male and mixed situations…because i think to do one and not the
other is kinda lame…

besides it is funny to watch the male-supremacist squirm when a
‘brother’ outs him…

> it wasn’t that bad a joke. I have heard much worse.

HA! i’ve sure told worse…

>
> btw: “feminist”, is that an insult for you? Just asking…

no no…i am absolutely a promoter of equal rights, equal pay, equal
opportunity and equal respect for all races, ethnic backgrounds,
citizenships, ages, colors, sexual persuasions and gender (either
actual or self visioned)…

>
> I do notice that you do seem to feel insulted pretty easily often…

i readily admit i can easily read a statement to mean something the
writer didn’t intend…sometime that leads to enlightenment,
sometimes not…

i have friends in Berlin today…if i were there, i’d invite you to
nice espresso/cappuccino/milchkaffee, on me…

Oh that’d be so cool. Let me know when you are in town, okay? Berlin is quite a nice city… well maybe not right now, but in summer it is.

Thank you for your reply, I do understand your point much better now… maybe I didn’t get the irony of it all, maybe the fact that this kind of irony often invites others to participate while they don’t even get the actual joke made me upset about it… either way, let’s be smooth.
