I know this has been mentioned multiple times already, but the topics keep getting locked. Why is there no “lock” option in GNOME 49? I don’t know all the keyboard shortcuts. It’s pretty ridiculous. I know one of you must be a programmer - should I be posting a
@as-muncher You mean screen lock? If so, super+L or the little padlock in the main menu next to the power…
nope, there’s no lock icon on my GNOME 49 on Wayland
@as-muncher a custom icon theme is use, or extension?
I don’t think so… I’ve never downloaded any extensions for gnome, no custom icon themes as far as I know… just as it is out of the box
Is the output from gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen true or false? If it’s true, then no button shown, just have to use super+L or set to false and it should appear…
entering that into the console, shows up as false
What about on Settings → Privacy & Security - Screen Lock is Automatic Screen Lock on?
I can get it to appear/disappear by setting true/false… eg;
Visible
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen false
Invisible
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen true
Yes automatic screen lock is on. I turned it off, but the lock symbol is not showing. Do I have to log out and then log in again to show it? I didn’t enter the codes you mentioned - should I do that? If you know a good screen capture program, please let me know because FlameShot is sh!t. Oh my gosh… I can’t even swear on this forum.
It’s is, please don’t circumnavigate the filters ![]()
Press the Prt Sc button on the keyboard, it’s built in to GNOME, just like screen recording (ctrl+alt+shift+r)
No need to log out or in, it should appear. Try those commands and see. Else fire up dconf-editor and check /org/gnome/desktop/lockdown
I also can’t change my power mode from Balanced to High Performance.
OK, so create a test user, login as the test user and check the features work or not.
A notification came up in the centre top saying that screen locking is disabled because GNOME needs the GNOME screen manager or something like that.
I think, after having so many troubles with GDM, I forced SDDM to be the default login manager. But it’s kind of stupid that gnome won’t even lock the screen unless it uses the gnome display manager… kind of makes sense because they don’t trust sddm or others I guess.
No update candidate for ‘gdm-49.2-1.1.x86_64’. The highest available version is already installed.
That’s the output from zypper in gdm
So you need to switch back to gdm…
