Themes in Fallback Mode

Seems like a silly question but I just want to be sure. Since I’m running 12.1 and my graphics card is in fallback mode, if I go to gnome-look.org and choose to install a theme do I use the GTK 3.x or GTK2.x? My instinct is to install GTK2.x, just want to be sure I don’t get any stability issues installing the wrong theme type considering I’m technically running Gnome 3.2.1 -

Is it even feasible for me to assume I can run any of these themes?

Thanks,
Kirk

So, on the other hand, I installed the Gnome themes from the suse repository and I get “could not list shell extensions” under Accessories>Advanced Settings>Theme>Shell Theme… As long as I can’t use Gnome 3, is there a way I can use Gnome 2? I’d just like to customize my Gnome Shell. Thanks.

Okay, back to my monologue, haha… I installed a new GTK+ theme directly from the openSUSE repository and I’m happy with Sonar and Equinox Classic (as a window theme). Now, my question is this, If I install “gnome2-look-and-feel” will I have more options or will that not even show up in fall-back mode. haha. I guess I should just try it lol. I’m not that surprised nobody has any interest in this thread yet. 12.1 installed on an older machine is probably not all that common. Most people are probably happily enjoying the full Gnome 3 desktop experience eh? I’m new to openSUSE coming from another distro and somewhat of a longtime newbie at that. Any comments here are appreciated. Even if it’s just to say hi lol.

Don’t say that! I use gnome-fallback a lot, not only on older machines.

Right you are! I’m seeing this sentiment elsewhere on the web as well. I’ve only seen a few screenshots of the Gnome 3 desktop and i can understand how people that prefer Gnome 2 would not be interested. I have to say, openSUSE on the whole has been excellent to me so far. I decided to try a slew of other distros after my main one of the past few years gave me insane issues after trying to add graphics cards and drivers. Its happened before to me too. I realize its user error but i was kinda not thrilled with the distro anymore either. I cant aay enough good things about the openSUSE distro from the install to performance to package handling. Im really enjoying the whole experience. I will be most likely getting a better graphics card. Im currently using the onboard chipset and its lagging slightly. I only have pci slots so my choices are limited.

I should say that for the first time in my (long) life I had to increase the memory on some on-board nvidia graphics to get Gnome-shell working. Otherwise it would hang or behave strangely. With older AGP nvidia graphic cards (the GeForce FX family), it doesn’t work at all (see this thread: NVIDIA drivers hangs opensuse 12.1). Gnome-fallback is normally always working and with some tweaking and theming can look pretty much like gnome2. Ubuntu’s Unity is not as bad as people say, at least in term of resource and performance (don’t mean look and feel). Unity works on older boards where Gnome-shell doesn’t.
