The usual Flash Firefox Konqueror issues

Hi guys & gals,

Have been using suse 10.3 and Kde 3.5.7 for a year now and all was relatively fine, not perfect but i could live with it and try to learn along the way.

I’ve had no flash working in Firefox 2.0.0.6 and so have depended on Konqueror (which i like a lot) but after playing around today and spending hours reading forum after forum, i have managed to disable flash from working in konqueror.

My current attempted solution was to download the current flash version. Then i moved the new version of libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib64/firefox/plugins and also to /usr/lib/browser-plugins (not a good idea, it overwrote the old version and now flash doesn’t work in Konqueror either)

So i was then trying to use the following:
nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib64/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so
and nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib/browser-plugins

but i get the following errors:

linux-ni1p:/usr/lib64/firefox/plugins #
nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib64/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so
*** NSPlugin Viewer *** ERROR: libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
nspluginwrapper: no appropriate viewer found for /usr/lib64/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so

linux-ni1p:/usr/lib64/firefox/plugins # nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so
*** NSPlugin Viewer *** ERROR: libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
nspluginwrapper: no appropriate viewer found for /usr/lib/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so

Also in firefox about : plugins, i have the following:
Silverlight Plug-in
File name: libmoonloader.so

Default Plugin
File name: libnullplugin.so

Shockwave Flash
File name: libgnashplugin.so

NPAPI Plugins Wrapper 0.9.91.4
File name: npwrapper.so

I have some other issues which i think is due to messing about too much with my suse (not in that way, haha) so i think my configuration is not very good.

So any help/advice/jokes/directions/pointing and laughing/ideas most welcome and appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Can you bring an example of web page that you cannot view with some flash content in it?

If I can, I will tell you the solution.

Hey Zsteffan,

Any youtube page for example. Video doesn’t play and the message is the usual:

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe’s Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

I see. The solution I have is the following.

Don’t use Konqueror for web browsing. Use Firefox.

If you have 64 bit opensuse and 64 bit Firefox, then you need to delete the Firefox, it and install 32 bit Firefox.

There are problems with it. In particular, one directory -
/etc/gre.d - needs to be removed after removal of 64 bit Firefox.

Need to install the latest version of mozilla-xulrunner, 32 bit.

Before deleting Firefox 64 bit, save the bookmarks, since probably you would need to delete the ~/.mozilla/

This is the beginning. After that, Java and multimedia players, including flash, shall be installed.

Tell me whether you have successfuly changed the Firefox, then we will continue.

Making multimedia work is an important and difficult task in using openSUSE.

Ok, before i go ahead and delete Firefox, a couple of questions:

  1. Whats the best way of deleting Firefox?
  2. I actually prefer Konqueror to Firefox, will your solution enable Flash for Konqueror too?

And thanks.

With packages supplied in repositories (and these are the ones that you and most users need), you shall delete and install packages via Yast. Have you added the Packman repository? If not, read how to add it. You will also need the update repository.

Add the repositories before deleting/adding packages.

When you start the Software management in Yast, pay attention to the tab called “Versions”. There is a small defect in Yast showing the tabs, so need to go back and forth a couple of times. In that tab, you shall see the availability of the 32 bit Firefox, latest version (3.0.4-3.1).

Don’t know about Konqueror.

Ok, i have packman but whats the full name for the update repository?

Ok, repositories are done. Yast also automatically installed flash for me without any errors but still no flash in either Firefox or Konqueror.

Also, currently in yast i have Mozilla v2.0.0.6-25.
I also have mozilla-nspr v4.6.7-20, mozilla-nss v3.11.7-15 and swfdec-browser-plugin v0.5.5-0, if thats any help to you.

I am not sure what is Mozilla v2.0.0.6-25.

The packages we speak about are called:

  • MozillaFirefox
  • mozilla-xulrunner190

Don’t bother about other packages from Mozilla Foundation. They will be automatically selected as needed.

You need to install the 32 bit version of MozillaFirefox.

It is OK if no multimedia plays now. That road is long…

I only have the option of mozilla-xulrunner181 and the MozillaFirefox package doesn’t give me the 32 option, it’s all 64 bit.

Perhaps you shall add the following repository as well:
Index of /repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.0

If this does not help, open the repositories you have in a browser and try to locate the rpm packages.

Here is the full list of the repositories that I use:

  1. openSUSE BuildService - Drivers for webcams: URL = Index of /repositories/drivers:/webcam/openSUSE_11.0_Update

  2. openSUSE BuildService - Mozilla: URL = Index of /repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.0

  3. openSUSE-DVD 11.0: URL = cd:///?devices=/dev/sr0

  4. Packman: URL = Index of /suse/11.0

  5. Updates for 11.0: URL = Index of /update/11.0

  6. openSUSE-11.0-Oss: URL = Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/oss

  7. openSUSE-11.0-Non-Oss: URL = Index of /distribution/11.0/repo/non-oss

ok, got the option for xulrunner190 and installed it although yast still doesn’t show a mozilla firefox 32 bit version.

H:Dey guys, i sorted out my respositories and Flash now works in Konqueror but still not in Firefox.
My updater says “new software for your system” but when i try i get the following error:

Problem: No valid solution found with just resolvables of best architecture.
Problem: java-1_5_0-sun-plugin cannot installed due to missing dependencies
Problem: No valid solution found with just resolvables of best architecture. With this run only resolvables with the best architecture have been regarded. Regarding all possible resolvables takes time, but can come to a valid result.
Solution 1: Make a solver run with ALL possibilities. Regarding all resolvables with a compatible architecture.

Can anyone translate for me?
