Error - KDesktop: The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly.
Getting this at login (following cold boot) if there are a few windows or tabs left open from previous session.
This is not about windows opened by root - regular windows opened by user. Also, not about CD/DVD windows when media was removed.
The problem is not 100% repeatable - maybe 1 in 5 to 10 logins.
When the error happens there are no icons on the desktop.
Found a few suggestions on line (even in this forum: Error msg: The process for the file protocol died - openSUSE Forums) but none helped.
In summary the suggestions point to:
A - corrupted or too large desktop background file = had same problems with the standard background or none at all.
B - slow CPU = Intel Quad Core @ 3.6GHz I think should do.
C - limited system or video RAM = 4GB DDR3 1700 & 9800GTX+ 512MB.
I also found some information regarding similar KDE bugs (in older versions) but no clear solution there either.
Workarounds:
I. Make sure to close everything before shutdown.
II. If the error happens, I could log off and log back in or create a new text file on the desktop (makes all icons reappear).
Any suggestion appreciated.
