The GNOME Floating Feets screensaver in MATE . . . busted down??

Folks:

I know this isn’t a “stop the presses” type of problem, but nonetheless it is a “function” in the MATE DE that is provided and apparently “supported.” A few days back I noticed that in my OpenSUSE based MATE screensaver that the GNOME Floating Feets image was again not working??? It looks like back in May I went through my MATE based distros and replaced the “gnome-logo-white.svg” . . . file to get the screensavers working . . . seems like something recent in an OpenSUSE update must have reverted the file back to the old and expired file???

I checked my U-MATE install and that screensaver is still working, but in my two OpenSUSE MATE options and my Linux Mint MATE edition lost touch with the freshly working .svg file . . . In a bit I’ll be checking another install of Manjaro MATE that I know I repaired back in May . . . to see if they have the broken package. The LM MATE install is only a week old, not sure if it was working before, but as of today it isn’t . . . .

I don’t know waht the problem might be (I don’t usually use Gnome or MaTE)
But if you make changes directly to something and the package is updated, it will always over-write your changes.

To resolve…
Plan ahead.
You can
Script your change so that all you need to do is run your script to re-apply the change. Save your script somewhere where it won’t be lost.
Make a backup of your change and re-apply as needed. Again, save this backup in a way it won’t be over-written or lost.

And,
If you absolutely identify a problem, be sure to submit a bug to https://bugzilla.opensuse.org so that someone can take a look at it and if your discovery is verified can make the change so it doesn’t affect others or you later.

Thanks for the reply . . . all good advice . . . “make a script” . . . very technical . . . . This is what would be the “second time” this has happened, first time in May, and now September . . . actually going back in time–might be going back further in time it has happened that the “floating Feet” image function wasn’t working. Again it isn’t “earth shattering” . . . but it might be that the MATE people aren’t aware of this issue, so they are reverting back to the expired .svg file . . . .

Once I get the newer .svg file downloaded into the home files, it’s like a two command . . . using sudo to remove the old file and move the newer one into “pixmaps” . . . not exactly worth dealing with making a script, but I guess if it keeps happening then sure . . . .

As far as a bug goes . . . it is a bug . . . I may have filed one on launchpad, but usually it doesn’t get too much attention . . . I probably have a couple three bug reports on the “floating feets” problem . . . . I should maybe try to find out where to contact the MATE people directly and see what they can do, because I think this is an “upstream” problem that the various OSs are passing on . . . although it seems like Manjaro MATE didn’t transmit the problem in recent updating . . . ???

Bug report filed . . . .

The Mate project has a GitHub page and I assume you can submit upstream bugs directly to them. The screensaver itself has its own site.

Ah, thanks for posting that . . . I did try to rifle around in the MATE biznez . . . but it wasn’t clear where they had a forum or where to report issues, so thanks for the link. I may have a github account already . . . .
