Thank You!!

I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all the folks who worked to get the Nvidia installation working.
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers
…I remember having to go to a console login and use an text mode installer, then cross fingers…
The zypper command-line install with repo support was awesome for my little Nvidia GTX 680 Ti

:shake: Opensuse rules.

And - of course I love nuveau - it’s utterly awesome. Breathtaking. Really.

But I decided to run BOINC and UT2k4, and so needed the GPU drivers…

Oops - well, maybe it only almost works  The ut2k4 transparent splash screen appears for a second or two, then I get this:

patti@OS123B:~> ut2004

Ummm… the display looks a little different - fonts and such - that I normally would see switching the drivers.
I had to instal libsdtc++33 to get the .so ut2k4 needed, but I don’t think that would cause this…

13.1x64, GeForce GTX 650Ti, AMD FX8350 16GB

This means that the driver (at least the OpenGL part) is not working properly.

Try to reboot, sometimes the driver does not work on first boot after installation.

Can you please post a list of all kernel/nvidia packages installed?

rpm -qa | egrep "kernel|nvidia"

And maybe the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log might provide a clue as well…

Hi
Yup, there should be something like the following in the event log;

Sat 11 Oct 2014 11:02:44 AM CDT | | CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 8800 GT (driver version unknown, CUDA version 6.5, compute capability 1.1, 511MB, 214MB available, 504 GFLOPS peak)
Sat 11 Oct 2014 11:02:44 AM CDT | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 8800 GT (driver version 340.32, device version OpenCL 1.0 CUDA, 511MB, 214MB available, 504 GFLOPS peak)

Yes…

It does not get uninstalled just not used.

Thank you, Golg… Hmmmm…

It is a Zotac GeForce GTX 650 clone - I wonder if I should download the Zotac NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.20.run file and run that from a console login. As I recall, nowadays this results
in a big problem with Opensuse’s xorg.conf file. First hurdle would be to uninstall the repo nvidia drivers without breaking everything… :-/

Hi
Not sure, I used the latest one (340.32) and it worked fine, it ran
scripts to disable things etc, I let it create an xorg.conf file
though…

Thanks, Malcom - you did the regular thing of running the .run file from
a console login? (downloaded from the nvidia website?) If so, I guess I
could uninstall with zypper the same way I installed, then try the .run file
approach since its creation of xorg.conf didn’t seem to break anything
for you…

…also, I just remembered that maybe the Nvidia***.run file didn’t know how to properly disable conflicting parts of nouveau - so you wind up with a broken display? Well, I guess it’s Saturday, so there’s time to mess around…

Hi
Yes I ran the .run file, no the nvidia install script should do all
that (well it did for me) I set the default boot to runlevel 3, reboot,
ran the file, reset the default boot and rebooted…

systemctl set-default multi-user.target
shutdown -r now
sh /data/repositories/downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.32.run -a
shutdown -r now
sh /data/repositories/downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.32.run -a
systemctl set-default graphical.target
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
shutdown -r now

I had to do reboot for the installer to disable all the nouveau stuff,
then edited the xorg.conf to add the coolbits option for overclocking
and fan control.

Well, that went perfectly smoothly. First I zypper remove x11-video-nvidiaG03 then zypper rr nvidia then reboot - and I seemed to be back to noveau. Then I did a console login and ran the .run file, which was successful - then reboot and presto. Except no audio in the game.

Presto! Sound! Another Saturday afternoon…

Sorry for being late…

Yes, the nvidia kernel module failed to load.
Your packages seemed to be ok, though.

So, as you solved it now anyway by installing the driver via the .run file, I’m not sure we should pursue this further.

One thought would be that you might need to have set NO_KMS_IN_INITRD=“yes” in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and run “sudo /sbin/mkinitrd” afterwards to fix it.
Otherwise, the output of:

sudo zypper in -f nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop

might have provided an answer if that failed somehow.

Well, moot now I guess.

But be aware that any update to the kernel, xorg-x11-server, or Mesa-libGL1 will break your driver installation and you will have to install it again.
