Terminate not responding processes

Hello,

Just now Rhythmbox has stopped working. I can’t restart it, so I thought I could kill the process to start it again. Is there something like the windows task manager in openSUSE or another way to list all processes and to kill one? I googled an found a few old threads saying that there is a performance monitor which is able to to that, but I can’t find that either.

You forgot to tell anything about your situation. Thus I describe this for KDE on 11.4.

With Ctrl-Esc you get a list of processes where you can select a pocess and then use the button with the red X above to kill it. Of course only when it is a process of own (user).

Have you tried Ctrl+Alt+Esc then a left mouse click on the open window of the program you wish to terminate? or run top from a terminal/console.

Sorry, I forgot about that. I am using Gnome on openSUSE 11.4. The keyboard shortcuts don’t seem to work. Ctrl + Esc opens my computer menu.

I executed top from a terminal window like dvhenry suggested and it works. Thank you.

I don’t use GNOME, but try to find their equivalent to
Ctrl+Alt+Esc then a left mouse click on the open window of the program you wish to terminate
Also, If you need to use this sort of thing often, spend a little time on working out the cause, (Get some details together on how and when it occurs, and post on these forums)
If this is anything other than a rare occurrence, You need to fix it.

On gnome you can run gnome-system-monitor (that is the name to start it from
a terminal or after pressing [ALT][F2]) it is somewhere in your menu (I
forgot where) if there is not key combination assigned to it you can do that
in your gnome control panel.

If that key combination is not working in gnome run [ALT][F2] and type
xkill.

You can also right click to panel, say add to panel and choose force quit. New icon appears on your panel. By clicking that icon and then clicking unresponsive application’s window, you can kill it instantly.
