I want to update my gnome to the latest version (2.30) because I have 2.28 so I go to terminal and enter the command “apt-get” or try “zypper dup” which both ask for root so I just add “sudo” before the commands and when it ask for the password it doesnt let me write it.
Why is this happening?
And of course, How do I fix this?
Are we to assume you already have the repos in place for this update?
Become su -
Like this
Become su in Terminal - HowTo - openSUSE Forums
But maybe you should post your repos for me:
zypper lr -d
Ok I only have the repos that opensuse brings plus packman and chrome browser.
I search for the gnome repos and a lot of bs pops out so I entered a result that brought me to the opensuse site with all the gnome repos but when I entered them it’s says something like the URL doesn’t work. I’m currently on the road now so when i get home I’ll check.
This are my repos…

Ok i got it now… (dont know if im missing a repo tho)
But I answer yes to the 2 questions and it started to perform the update after a few minutes I check it back and the only thing in the terminal is
Y
Y
Y
Y
Y
Y
Y
is it normal? They dont seem to end…
I’ll check back here tomorrow, I have to crash now. But those repos need editing by the looks.
If the terminal was performing an update you would see the list of packages as they installed.
From your repo list I see nothing that will let you upgrade gnome

First let me correct something else.
Repo number 2 needs removing; To do that, open a terminal and become su -
Do:
zypper rr 2
Now we need to do more to correct the fact that you had that repo enabled, but we shall sort out gnome first.
You need to add this repo:
Index of /repositories/GNOME:/Factory/openSUSE_11.2
You can do it from a su - terminal
zypper ar -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/Factory/openSUSE_11.2/ gnome
then
zypper ref
accept licence/key
Now try this, if it throws questions you can’t answer, quit it, come back
zypper dup -r gnome
I get this now… so what do I select?
I obviously forgot to say I was 64bit sorry It’s my first system so I forget its an important detail
Resolving dependencies…
Computing distribution upgrade…

Solution 1: keep obsolete libgdu0-2.28.1-2.1.1.x86_64
Solution 2: break libgdu0 by ignoring some of its dependencies

Be patient with me whilst I test this on my machine.
Within the hour I’ll be back
OK, I’m back.
I don’t like the look of it.
Remove that repo for now and let me look in to this…

Originally you said the above.
Updates are done this way:
First learn to become su -
Become su in Terminal - HowTo - openSUSE Forums
Note the point made about passwords. They do not show as you type
In su - terminal do this
zypper ref
then
zypper up
Leave gnome as it is for now
ok thank you…
Sorry for taking your time…
