I’m sure the OP could have done that, and probably even did.

I expect he’s asking for recommendations by folks actually using one.
It’s one thing to wade through dozens of posts on line, many of which
won’t be all that helpful. It’s another to get an answer from someone
saying “I’ve been using X and it did/didn’t work out of the box, the
interface did/didn’t suck, etc.”

Often times folks don’t care what they use. They just want a product
they know will do the job with minimum hassle. That’s not to much to ask.

Someone on this list is using some brand/model of tape drive. It would
be nice to know what that is, and how they like it.

Why does every question on usenet have to turn into a full blown
research project?

Unless you have to use a tape drive because it’s an server setup or you already have it, you might want to consider backing up to a removable HD. Much easier to handle and a selective restore is quick. Some HDs are starting to be as cheap as a handful of backup tapes.

Because it’s all there. One could also easily research field reports on certain applications.

Sure, if one wants to spend a few hours pouring over lots of web pages.
On the other hand, if one or two folks say “I’m using this and it
works great” then you’ve saved a lot of time and have a reasonable
expectation of success. That leaves lots of time for other fun stuff.
I like free time for other stuff.

By way of example, a couple months ago I needed a wireless NIC. Nothing
fancy. I spent too much time looking over different options, trying to
figure out what chipset works and what doesn’t, etc. It would have been
really handy if someone had told me “Go get an XYZ. Recognized out of
the chute, and decent performance.” Never did see a post like that though.

(FWIW, I got a D-Link AR2413 off ebay for about $4 IIRC. An older card,
but it meets my needs.)

I just don’t get it. It’s no harder for someone to say “I’m using such
as such” than it is to say “Google is your friend”. But that’s life…

please count all of the folks here who can say:
I’m using XYZ Tape Backup Pro…it has a cool GUI like dark side
admins love and beats mt by miles!!

ok, lets count them: zero, or nearly zero here in this forum…so,
should we all just let the question sit, forever? (though, i agree
that “google it” was a little stark…but only a LITTLE!)

I feel annoyed that I can’t put my wide range of languages on stupid
Facebook. For example, I speak Sarcasm, fluently spoken and written,

Actually I use ABC Tape Backup Pro so I didn’t answer. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m actually in favour of letting the question sit there. It only costs a small amount of disk storage, and the questioner can fret about the lack of answers while we are off celebrating the holidays. lol!

That makes no sense. It does not take hours to do some research on a type of application, but waiting for replies about experiences for a type of program that is pretty exotic in most home desktop system actually does (and did). If one really needs direct feedback, googling will show more appropriate forums as well (server forums come to mind).

Anyway, you are dragging this thread offtopic, so let’s stop here. I was really trying to help by giving a hint, that’s all.

but, we agree (i guess) that it is ok for others to have other
ideas…right?

btw: you misspelled ‘favor’ (by adding an unneeded, silent letter)

happiy houlidays alle

You misspelled all by adding an extra e. :stuck_out_tongue:

Keep warm.

Just to set the record straight, the Oxford English Dictionary lists “favour” as an English word. I believe the dictionary is considered the highest authority on English spelling. Of course the language spoken in the U.S.A. is ubiquitous these days, so I can understand your error.

Have a nice day!

oh boy, i see i must have forgotten to add one of these  so the
spelling police could relax!

But he didn’t ask for XYZ Tape Backup Pro. He ask for a recommendation
for a tape backup app with a gui. I’ve no idea who may or may not be
using “XYZ Tape Backup Pro” but surely there’s someone here using a tape
backup and managing it with a gui.

Sometimes questions get good answers, sometimes not. If nobody here is
running a GUI based tape backup program then he still got his money’s
worth. But if someone comes back and says “Bacula with the gui plugins
works great for that (http://bacula.org/en/?page=screenshot)” then he’s
ahead of the curve.

That’s my .02 worth anyway…

ok good…there is one (so far) with a recommendation.

I’m curious about good backup software. I don’t currently have a tape
drive, but I have used it in the past and I like the idea. However, really
good ones are too expensive.

So I’m not going to google the subject, but I’m curious.

In the past, in MsDos, I used PC Backup, from the pctools suite. With
floppies it was really good: I have backups done ages ago and they still
work. The software can recover from bad sectors, and was so fast that I
barely had time to label the floppies and stick the sticker before it asked
for the next floppy (without key prompt). With two drives was even faster.

I have not seen software like that in linux. Specially, the error recovery
part, using dvds for example. Maybe it exists, but I haven’t seen it.
