Maybe one could use the same argument for spices in cooking. What would a bolognese sauce be without basil I wonder?
Or maybe we shouldn’t watch football.
Perhaps all brides should get married in a registry office.
True it’s not life critical… But what this form of communication still misses is the ability to pass on body language/emotion so these smilies help in stating how one is expressing something… Having a good set of them can be essential and as a very simple example:
RTFM!
RTFM!
Not the best example but I think you catch my drift…

you might notice that i didn’t suppose that my opinion should be forced
on anyone…just that, it IS possible to glean the knowledge available
herein without using the ‘fluff’…
fortunately, you can do it your way and i can do it my way at the same
time–i use simple, unadorned text only messaging (via Firefox and NNTP)
to interact here…there are no smileys, winkie-blinkies, photos,
icons, avatars etc etc etc between me and the TEXT…
if you say something smart/helpful but use a lame photo, font,
whatever…i’ll never know, and will therefore assume nothing about you
because you chose to look dorky (for example)…
otoh, if you have the absolute kewlest LOOKING sig on the planet and say
something dumb, i’ll not be swayed into thinking you are as smart as you
APPEAR…

believe me, i know i’m swimming upstream here (that is, against the
popular current)…
but, back in the dark ages of the internet when i joined the community
(1995) we didn’t have winki-blinkies but, we did have smiley…
actually, i read your reply in NNTP basic text and understood it
completely without a jpg involved…(though i did wait and wait and
wait for the forum page to load in html in my browser to make sure i
heard you correctly)
here i saw {a colon and a capital D} and  {the word ‘mad’
between to colons} and {a smiley made with a semicolen and close
parenthesis}
all just like we “used to do it” back in the dark ages…
In this case I just like to sit on my rubber tire, enjoy the ride and take a sip of my longdrink (notice I’m giving you the old fashion wink here just to prove I also have knowledge of these older dark age technologies…)
It’s all good as long as people get to express in an efficient and clear way, so I guess we have a common view there!
