Taking a backup of entire hard drive into image

Hi guys
Just shifted from windows to OpenSUSE and the problem is

In windows I used symantec ghost to backup entire drive or partition and tried to use the same for the linux but it didn’t work for me and after searching I found some programs like clonezilla I tried it.

Now the problem is I took the backup of entire hard drive(8 GB flash) and when I try to restore it it completes without error and boots to grub menu
grub>

I am using opensuse 12.2

Any help would be appreciated.

Please guys don’t think it as a silly question because i need to install in 15 systems

So, it sounds like grub 2 has not found it’s grub.cfg menu file. You don’t indicate if you have a working system. I suggest you might want to find out more about grub before you go any further. For grub 2 have a look at these links:

GNU Grub2 Command Help/Config Editor - Version: 1.85 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

I highly recommend you do some reading before you go any further.

Thank You,

If I were to image a disk of 8GB I would use dd. I’m not happy how
clonezilla handles grub.

how to use dd command to take the image of entire hard disk.

Yes I have a working system and I have 15 systems of same configuration so I need to take the backup image to install in those systems.

I would use autoyast for such mass installation. openSUSE 12.1: AutoYaST

If you are going to install 15 computers you should already know how dd
works. Read the man page, it is all there.

Basically

dd if=FROMDEVICEORFILEPATH of=TODEVICEORFILEPATH bs=100M

Warning: it is a powerful command, does what you order, even if you
order to destroy all your disks.
