Takes long to get destop up (Gnome)

After I reach init 5 it takes me about 30 seconds to get a completely loaded desktop. I have checked my sessions and it has all the default values only. I disabled Beagle and the bluetooth manager.

Initial boot-up after install was faster. Is there any way of improving this? Does the Harddisk need defragmentation, although everybody claims it is not needed?

No it is surely not needed defragmentation , they only thing is that you may not use more than let say 80% to 90% of the partition space .
Even more their is no defrag utilities fort linux
