Leap 42.1
KDE
Performed an automatic update containing 80 or so upgrades. No errors. Rebooted.
Computer now stops at CLI with error “systemd-readahead[426]: Failed to open pack file: Read-only file system”
Can get to login prompt and successfully login.
Booting to rescue USB drive and running fsck finds no errors.
Is no one else experiencing this error?
Does no one know the cause or the fix?
Any chance you have Windows partitions mounted??
No, although I do have an empty FAT partition set aside to give me that option if I ever want it.
Cause of the problem was that the updates made changes to my FSTAB file.
After fixing the changes that were made, I was able to boot without the “read only” error but needed to zypper more patches to get system to reach graphical login page.
This done, KDE displayed only a blank screen after login. Solution was to manually re-install the NVIDIA driver. (A practice I learned to do after an NVIDIA driver update supplied through YaST conflicted with the Leap 42.1 kernel in use that the time, causing a blank-screen system. I since disabled NVIDIA driver updates from YaST.)
It seems that Leap 42.1 is getting worse and worse. Is it a sinking ship?
Any update should never touch /etc/fstab. Any changes are ones you put there
Manually installed NVIDIA driver must be reinstalled after any change to the kernel or any X stack programs. Always been that way. Don’t want that use the repo.
42.1 ends life in about 7 months, 42.2 is out in about 6 weeks ±
And yet, I witnessed a working computer —> Updates —> Reboot —> Hosed computer.
Manually installed NVIDIA driver must be reinstalled after any change to the kernel or any X stack programs. Always been that way. Don’t want that use the repo.
Agree. I would like to trust the repo but NVIDIA driver updates from there hosed my computer twice, so I quit.
But a updates do not change fstab. Simply does not happen It may change how foreign FS are mounted but the table does not change unless you are doing something very odd.
