Hello there, i just install today openSUSE 12.03 on my acer AOD-257 (i’m new using this distro), it work well for a couple of hours, i actually updated a couple of time and rebooted like any other linux distro, but after the last update the shut down icon won’t reboot or shut down, the desktop just turn like an old picture, so i use a terminal/console as super user to rebooted through it, as the update asked. After this the login screen change to something called “linux 1u2” and it won’t take my login and password, i try the recovery mode and is exactly the same, can anyone please help :, i was so happy…
Hello and welcome here.
I guess you mean openSUSE 12.3 (not 12.03). Can you please also tell which desktop environment you use (KDE, Gnome, other). That is important because you talk about your desktop.
You also say you “updated a couple of time”. Please explain exactly what you did. The word “update” can mean several things, thus please tell which program/tool you used. And also why you did this several times within a few hours.
I had that problem on two computers.
I believe it is the KDE update to 4.10.3 that causes the problem. If you were using KDE (as I assume that you were), them KDM is running. And apparently, the update causes some problems for the running KDM.
In my case, I used CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (twice) to kill the desktop. The desktop did not restart, so I used CTRL-ALT-DEL (twice, if I recall) to reboot. After the reboot, everything was fine.
On a third computer, where I was using GDM instead of KDM, the update went without a hitch and I could logout then login again to get a 4.10.3 KDE session.
Also what video chip/card and did you install any proprietary drivers?
Also when you say log in screen is it a GUI or text mode??
It is normal to have a nonsense name for the machine until you set one. Don’t worry what the machine calls itself at this point.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, it is the 12.3 with KDE environment, and i use the Yast to update because it pop up the 1st time that i connect the machine to the internet, telling me about new updates, did it, i lost signal in the middle of the update and try the update again, then the Yast window request the reboot which i did (as usual like other linux distro) and the machine turn on normal then a new update pop up and this was the one who cause the problem, as far as i can recall.
note i can’t access to the system to give you more info for this same reason, it won’t take my login and password it just shows a grey low resolution window with the words “welcome to linux-1u2s.net”. i type in my login and password and won’t work.

I’m not on your seat, I can not see over your shoulder. If you do not
give accurate information, I can do nothing. I’m trying to help you, but
is you who has to make an effort and do the actual things.
