System tray applications icons ? kde 5

Hi
I think I’ve try everything except what could fix this issue, of not seeing Thunderbird, dropbox, and others icons in the system tray.
The space is there, but no icons.
Is anyone facing this issue ?

Thanks

This is a known problem on some systems (nvidia in particular) that old-style XEmbed system tray icons are completely transparent. (well, actually Plasma 5.4 doesn’t support/show them at all, but we added xembed-sni-proxy that’s officially included in 5.5 for old-style support to our 5.4 packages… )

It has been fixed upstream last Sunday, an update for Leap is on the way and should be available tomorrow, or in the next few days at least.
If you don’t want to wait, you can install it from the update-test repo now.
Run e.g. this:

sudo rpm -U http://download.opensuse.org/update/leap/42.1-test/x86_64/xembed-sni-proxy-0.0.1git~20151104~ded1538-3.1.x86_64.rpm

:good: Ok, that fixed. I can see the icons now. Thanks !

But before I’ve installed this, I already had about 10 crashes in kde… this is not good. I’m almost missing windows ? :\ … hum… no I’m not.

I really like the split functionality in dolphin and all the actions that one can make with it, diff, etc… and more or less, that’s it.

Do you know, if in Mate, or someother desktop manager, one can have that function ?
I’ve try to install mate in 13.1 and 13.2 , but it was not stable them, I got a endless loop. Is it stable now ?
This kde5 as a long way to go.
Thanks

Hard to say anything about that without more information, e.g. what are you doing when it crashes, what is exactly crashing, a backtrace,…

But maybe a graphics driver problem. Try to install a proprietary driver if possible (nvidia, fglrx).

For intel, try this:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Switch_xf86-video-intel_to_UXA
There are severe problems in that driver that cause Plasma5 (but also other applications that use OpenGL) to crash.
Switching to the older UXA acceleration should help, see also:

No idea, I don’t use Mate.

But you can definitely also use dolphin in Mate or any other desktop.

Not really. But some graphics drivers still have a long way to go (nouveau in particular… ).

Basically, it crashes when applying desktop configurations. I was trying to have those system tray icons, so I tested with all the themes, and icons.
I already have the fglrx installed , before that, I could do much in kde.

Possibly not, the kde it’s ok, some twinklings in the theme and icons.

Thanks

I am also getting though intermittent(although a lot of) crashes when trying to change various values in the Desktop Settings dialog box…
If I stay out of that dialog, Leap seems to be a lot more stable. This has been happening for me since I started testing RC1, which
I also reported to the bug report system at that time. Sounds like it did not make it to the proper place somehow though since this
issue was still there in the final release of Leap 42.1.

I also have no icons in my system tray or KDE start menu area. Sounds like the upcoming update will solve
that however…

Thank you,

Curtis

Hm, I don’t see that here.
I’m running 13.2 still though (with the latest packages from KDE:Frameworks5), but I cannot reproduce it in my Leap 42.1 VM either.

Maybe one of the upcoming updates (Qt 5.5.1 in particular) will fix that though.

And where exactly did you report it?
Can you provide a link please?

Yes.
Depending on what your actual problem is.

The update will solve invisible old-style system tray icons. Nothing about any “KDE start menu area”…

This is where I reported the issue with no start menu icons or desktop folder icons:

https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/511877-LEAP-42-1-No-Application-Icons-in-Start-menu-or-Desktop-folder

I see now that there was a reply, but I had not received an email notification, unfortunately.

To answer the first question, this was a totally clean install on an empty disk.

I am not quite sure how to attach or post a pic with this reply.
I have an image for the app menu if someone could give me
some instructions on the proper way to post it.
I tried a drag/drop but that was unsuccessful.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to read and reply…

Ah, yes.
It was me who replied there anyway…

Let’s continue with that problem in the other thread then.

Upload it to some image sharing site (http://susepaste.org e.g.) and post a link. If you click on the “Insert Image” button in the forum editor’s tool bar and enter the link into the dialog that appears, the forum should show the image in your post.
