I am an advanced beginner with a periodic problem.
My 12.1 system has developed a habit of becoming unresponsive with lots of disk thrashing. It has been going on for a couple weeks. It seems to be getting worse. Usually a minute or two, the mouse response slows or stops and there is lots of noise from the disk. Then the disk noise stops and it is normal again. Yesterday during a longer than usual session of this which lasted about 10 minutes I had to go to a Windoze machine to check on this forum and found a thread with a similar title and I have found, although the symptom there sounded to me similar, that I am not using Btrfs.
I will run some disk diagnostics to make sure the disk is ok. The disk is an old ibm ide.
My questions:
Is there a thing like Task Manager (cntl-alt-del) in opensuse? It would be nice to see what is using resources real time. suse just offers to shut me down.

If you are using KDE, you can run the command ksysguard which is very
similar to taskmgr in windows or use one of the command line tools like
top (I prefer htop).

One further thought, this could also be the result from excessive use of
swap in contrast to a problem with your file system.
You should see that swap usage with ksysguard and also if you simply run
the command “free”. How much RAM does your system have?

I have the system monitor up and it does look and feel a lot like System Manager.
Then I am confused. How do I "run the command “FREE”? I do not see a place to enter commands in system manager and if I go to my terminal window it does not respond to commands.
I see - until I close system monitor, then I can enter FREE and I see that I have 1023784 Mem with 106692 Free. But I am not having the problem now.
I will have to remember these steps. When the system bogs down, it is very sluggish and I will have to see if I can open the terminal window.
We will see how it goes.

If you see a lot of disk activity it can indicate a bad sector. Run smartctl or low level disk scan to see if there is one. Note sometime the disk will detect this and map a spare sector onto the bad
It just happen again just now. Five minutes thrashing and now we are back to normal.
I did not do the disk scan yet. I will do so first thing tomorrow morning.
I was able to open the terminal window and then I could not control the computer. The mouse moved sporadically in response and no response to my careful and slow waiting typing intended for the terminal window. Now all is normal.
