I start up the machine and face the following problem after some time passes.
applications are loosing top bar containing buttons for closing, maximising minimising. they hang up afterwords.
i was downloading using firefox and found that instead of downloading files to download folder it is downloading in root. i tried to move files from root to other folders but it is giving “permission denied” message. Later i noticed it has lost all its history, bookmarks.
… found that instead of downloading files to download folder it is downloading in root …
Do you mean / or* /root* or something different?
In any case, / and / root should be unwriteble except for root in a normal installation. In that case, FireFox must be run as root to achieve what you say, which is of course undesirable (to make an understatement).
@gogalthorp …i have two users …none has the name “root” …one of them is name as “test”…the other is “prasipta saha”
well i just restarted the machine and i find that firefox is downloading files now to the designated location. and the entire history of browsing and downloading in the previous session is missing…also bookmarks are back
hanging problem with missing top bars is still there

seems you did start firefox as root in that previous session–unless you
loged in as root to begin with. perhaps you started FF from a terminal
which you had switched to ‘root’ (su) and forgot about it?
this would explain all types of strange behavior, since running
applications unknowingly as root has the potential to mess up file
permissions everywhere.

check your HW (memtest at least 48 hours); inspect MB for
capacitors with domed head. If memtest fails or you find
suspicious capacitors: time for new RAM modules (to be tested
before operation!) or a new MB.
do a kernel compilation with the -j switch. If your computer
survives that without error, fine. If not: see above.
i might have used the root password to launch another application in terminal before i started firefox (which started from GUI only)…
@Chris
this might be a possibility because my graphics card got burnt last week, i changed it afterwords. may be ram got damaged along with that …plz tell me how to run those test you have mentioned …where should i find the documentation …or any videos etc
