System not responsive and no display after leaving it idle for hours

Hello, I’m on GNOME - X11 - Tumbleweed
If I leave my system idle for long time, let’s say 6-10 hours, my system doesn’t wake up, CPU led stays on, HDD led blinks only once after I press a key on the suspended system and then it doesn’t, and nothing happens.

  1. I checked the monitor, it’s fine
  2. There are no power cuts, because if there had been the CPU led would be off, it doesn’t turn back on automatically
  3. I just suspended my session manually to see if I can recover from that and I was able to
  4. My system can recover from sleep mode
  5. My system can recover after I leave it for 2-3 hours

I checked the gnome-settings and sleep is set after 5 mins of inactivity and auto-suspend is set for 15 mins

Now, after my system becomes unresponsive like I described

  1. Pressing a key turns on my keyboard LED and mouse but I don’t get any display (login screen)
  2. My monitor doesn’t show anything, if I restart it (from switchboard) my monitor says no HDMI cable
  3. If I use my keyboard to shut it down blindfolded by assuming it is just not displaying otherwise working so I would log in and then open terminal with my shortcut and sudo poweroff - it doesn’t work either

The only way to recover, I see, is hold power button to force a power off.

This is the third time I left my system for so long and it happened again. I haven’t used this PC a lot (maybe 3-4 weeks) and openSUSE was the first OS I installed in it (coming from endeavour), and I loved it, nice lizard! so I haven’t performed further testing if this would happen in let’s say Mint as well or if I can SSH login from termux.

If you need any logs please tell me

Thank You

@g0x0 Hi and welcome to the Forum
Can you describe your hardware setup (laptop/desktop?), can you post the output from inxi -GSaz.

Hi thx

It is a desktop, pretty low spec i just use it for browsing/reading/research, some old intel 3rd get processor (1 year old)
the following is 1 month old

  • ram ddr3 8gb
  • motherboard zebronics h61
  • cpu fan
  • ssd crucial 256 gb
  • usb wifi dongle

apart from that cooler master case, using hdmi, Dell monitor 6 yo, no speakers

here is the output

@g0x0 Do you have another system you could try and login from over ssh? Could be the older BIOS power setting fighting with newer ones.

If you peruse the previous boot in reverse journalctl -b -1 -r should see from the actual power off and back…

Yes I have other systems but unfortunately I accidentally disabled ssh in my router then locked it, forgot about that  but that’s alright I’ll try to use something else but this will take 24 hr as I will have to wait for my system to crash again

Meanwhile I was going through my journalctl and found something
Now iirc last night I left my PC on at around 01:00 AM then went back to it at around 03:00 PM afternoon
But the log shows alot of entries at around 10:40 am and then the log ends so the system crashed, I’ll also post output of journalctl -b -0 and it does start at around 03:00 PM

Here is the journalctl -b -1 output
I’ll be removing the logs of these things from output:

  • browser
  • discord
  • network mgr
  • modem mgr
  • dbus daemon
  • avahi daemon
  • gnome-shell
  • chronyd

etc

Do I have to change some BIOS setting of my motherboard?
BTW I haven’t touched this PC from around 1 am to around 3 pm

thanks

@g0x0 most of the errors seem to be the USB wifi dongle…

Show

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
cat /sys/power/state

Alright I’ll disconnect the wifi dongle before sleeping and see if my system stays alive

thx for suggestion

g0x0@happ ~> cat /sys/power/mem_sleep
[s2idle] shallow

g0x0@happ ~> cat /sys/power/state
freeze standby mem disk

Still it resumed at 10:39:57. The question is why, it may be related to the problem. Have you checked previous cases - did system also resumed in between and went to sleep immediately?

I haven’t checked previous cases, I’ll put this system ON for the night again and see what I get tomorrow, I’ll disconnect keyboard mouse and wifi just to render out the possibility that someone might have pressed a key
