Hello all !
I am using SUSE 11.1 (x86_64) from last 2 months, I have some strange problem, don’t why it is occuring, whenever I enable Desktop effects & use one of it’s effect (i.e. Shift Switcher (Cover) or any other) using ALT + TAB, my system stuck & stops there (only mouse pointer moves then) . So I have to restart my laptop again & again (which sucks) !!!
Please help me out about this problem :’(
Various reasons, often related to graphics hardware and your configuration. You don’t give us much to go on and it’s not clear if this has always been an issue or the problem has just started. Perhaps you can offer some clarification?
Tell us also if you use kde or gnome and it would help if you did this from a terminal and post it too:
zypper lr --details

Add Packman from the community list
Then update all unconditionally in Packman
Not that I think this is all a source to your issue. But you might as well have everything correct.
And we still don’t know anything about your system, memory, graphics…

I am using Sony VAIO VGN-C190G, Centrino Duo, 2Ghz (x2), 2GB RAM, 256MB graphic Card, 100 GB HDD…
You really do play things close to your chest.
Is this a laptop? My search seems to indicate it is.
Graphics type??
Whats wrong man ?
Its a laptop …
SONY VAIO VGN-C190G
Come on. You cannot call any car repair shop telling them you’ve got a car and there is something wrong with it. Caf needs to know what kind of graphics card you have. For NVidia, ATI and some Intels you need drivers to get the full blow out of the card, just like on your previous OS.
Concerning the Intel graphic card, what type is it. You can find out in Yast - Hardware info.
Can you post the contents of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf ? It contains the settings for the X-server, the graphic display server.
And: be nice, polite, people tend to help you sooner.
Hi,
I just installed the OpenSuse 11.1 and got the same problem right here.
If desktop effects are enabled, when I do Alt-Tab or sometimes switch to few windows manually using mouse the display will then frozen and I only could move the mouse pointer.
I’m using GNOME 2.24.1, Kernel 2.6.27.25-0.1-default
here is from glxinfo :
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1600 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8494 Release
Is this problem solved already?
Thanks.
Maybe he does not know how to get this information.
Man, run “lspci | grep -i vga” as root and post the result here.
I have many problems with video too. In my case, this happen because
I use a Intel graphics adapter, more specifically the GM 965,
that is not the worst card to use with OpenSUSE 11.1 only because
there exist the VIA ans SiS cards!
So, with these problems I would bet that your graphics card is Intel too.
But, these guys have to be sure to try help you!
Bye.
B U M P…
need help… I already posted my Graphic Card’s Information above
I installed ATI driver using YAST.
Thanks.
I don’t know if this will help but I had similar problems but with 32bit. Desktop effects always caused freezing where only the mouse would work.
I then discovered it was related to the window decoration and widow style I was using. I was using Polyester style with Plastique decoration at the time which caused the problems. When I switched the window decoration to something else (laptop in my case, but oxygen also worked) my troubles went away. I now have Polyester with laptop and it all works fine. I can’t explain why but for me it was the solution.
So it may be worth just trying a different style and or decoration to see if that helps. I know it’s a long shot but nothing to lose.
