Hi, there!
I have a new installation of openSuse 12.3 (KDE desktop), and it works fine.
But sometimes, when I try to return the system from the screensaver, it hangs with a black screen.
The only way to return I found, is rebooting the system.
Where can I get data in order to find what happens in those cases?
I beg your pardon for little information.
Thank you for your collaboration.
Are you using openGL? What screen saver? What video card are you using? So, I use nVIDIA and I could not get openGL Compositing to work until I upgraded to kernel 3.8 and so I wonder if you have openGL working or not or if you need it for the screen saver you have selected?
Thank You,
I’m using StarWars screensaver, and have installed NVIDIA G210 video card.
Note: I can test the screensaver, and it works fine.
Thank you.
Are you sure that’s the screensaver?
I have that happen on one computer. It uses the radeon graphics driver, so possibly not the same problem.
In the power manager settings, there is a setting to dim the screen after so many minutes. And there is a setting to shut off the display after so many minutes.
In my case, after experimenting, I found that unchecking the box for dimming the screen solves the problem. Apparently something goes wrong when it tries to recover from the dimmed screen.
And an incidental comment: When that problem has happened to me, I have been able to:
CTRL-ALT-F1 – should get me a virtual console screen (except it is completely black)
CTRL-ALT-DEL – (maybe twice) should then reboot.
That rebooting is blind, but it is better than forced power off.
You could try installing the proprietary nvidia driver. Maybe that would help?
See: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers
And if you do that, don’t forget to add your user to the “video” group:

I’m not sure my problem will be the screensaver.
Only, I see, after the screensaver must begin, the screen becomes black. When I want to resume, nothing happens:
CTRL-ALT-F1: no efect
CTRL-ALT-DEL: no efect
The only way I found to resume is rebooting by pressing reset button.
Note: Somtimes, the screensaver works fine and I can resume to normal use of the system by mouse moving.
I need a log file where I’d see what was happen.
Thanks, a lot.
I’ve installed propietary NVIDIA drivers and the user is in video group.
thank you very much.
I’m seeing similar behavior on my 2008 iMac 8,1 (ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT): multiboot OS X 10.6.8, Ubuntu Studio 12.10, and openSUSE 12.3 KDE
Black screen freeze occured twice during updates, leaving me unable to detect update conclusion and forcing reboot to correct. Troubleshooting thus far, I’ve disabled suspend (default set to 4 mins) and I did not have screensaver enabled.
It’s a fairly new installation, so I’m still troubleshooting this and other bugs.
