System freezing/crashing since snapshot 20250123-0 - Tumbleweed XFCE

Hello,

Ever since I upgraded to snapshot 20250123-0, which also updated the kernel to 6.13.0-0.1, my computer freezes - sort of.

Examples:

I’m playing chess online and all of a sudden my mouse and keyboard stop working while I’m watching my clock run out of time. The only way I can get out of it and back in the game (if I’m lucky) is if I hard reboot. The same with all applications - VLC playing a video: it continues to play while I stand here like a lemon punching my keyboard.

And watch the memory when the freeze happens, a well known reason for a freeze is running out of memory.

It does indeedy. Now what? Shouldn’t matter, should it? I also have a drive with xubuntu 24.10 installed and it’s never crashed. And I do mean, literally, never crashed. Now that I think about it, I don’t think Tumbleweed has ever crashed - properly crashed. Until now…

Do you think it’s related to the update I mentioned? Bit coincidental if it isn’t, but I’ll keep an open mind.

Since XFCE went to 4.20 I’m very surprised at the problems that have arisen. I’ve used it for a very long time and the only reason I do is because it doesn’t do these things. Maybe it’s not XFCE at all - I’m honestly a bit lost.

@tedkunterblast Hard to say… maybe Mesa and kernel updates… I think there are a few folks with old intel gpus that are noticing some regressions… I have MicroOS and Hyprland on old Intel hardware without issues. The rest are GNOME based.

How much of the log - just before I hit the “off” button?

With the command you used journalctl -S "2025-02-12 12:42:26", you get the log from the given moment till current time so I do not think this log is capturing the hang.

Try journalctl -b -X with X being a number, -1 being the one but last boot, -2 being the one before etc. etc. I would say the last 100 lines before the end would suffice.

Did you have a look at them when such a freeze happens? Anything special?

What you could try:

1. Install memtest86+, this will give you a new boot option, boot that and run memtest for at least 30 minutes or better overnight, does it find errors?
2. Monitor temperatures using sensors
3. Install stress-ng and run something like stress-ng --cpu 4 --iomix 4 --vm 2 --vm-bytes 1G --fork 4 --timeout 100s. Change “cpu 4” to the number of cores your cpu has, change “–vm-bytes 1G” to the half of your memory size
4. Enable the Magic SysRq Key via Yast, see Configuring Security Settings with YaST | Security Guide | openSUSE Leap 42.3 and try that when the freeze happens
5. Do you have a second computer/smartphone on the network the computer is connected to. If so, can you try to see if ping works when the freeze happens?

I did look at them and all was fine.

I’m almost positive it’s my keyboard/mouse wireless dongle thingy (although that doesn’t explain why it only happens on Tumbleweed). I say this because I left my computer on seeding ISO torrents, playing videos on Vimeo, and Thunar. When my input froze, the torrents were still seeding, videos still playing with sound, and when I inserted a thumb drive, it popped up in Thunar.

I ran journalctl -b | grep usb and journalctl -b | grep logitech and saw no errors.

This is a real mind-bender. After input has failed, I’ve tried moving the dongle to every available port without success and I’ve also plugged in a cabled keyboard and mouse - still no input.

Sometimes I can go a whole day without issue, sometimes it’ll freeze input three times in a row within 20 minutes. Odd, but a deal-breaker that I’m desperately trying to fix. Ironically, I’ve resorted to using Windows for all the consulting work that requires long sessions of screen sharing as I’ve been embarrassed one too many times. Even though I’m now confident it’s my devices, Windows doesn’t skip a beat with my hardware, even if it starts going awry.

Maybe I should simply replace the batteries .

And if you can ssh into the machine when frozen, try sudo rmmod usbhid; sleep 3; sudo modprobe usbhid, if that does not work, replace ushid by hid_generic. Also good to try:

Thanks for your help. I haven’t tried to ssh into the box yet but what I’ve tried is the following:

Reinstalled with GNOME: Worked for a few hours then it went boom.
Reinstalled with my same setup of XFCE: Same.
Played the Hendon Shuffle with the USB ports and tried wired devices (pointless it seems now): Same.

Please ignore the last two posts. I had one too many…

I think the issue is either my UBS hub/extender or an almost full 64GB thumb drive formatted as NTFS (has an old Windows backup on it). Linux Mint won’t mount it, neither will Xubuntu. Both say it’s either the “wrong” file system or it’s corrupt.

Yesterday I refrained from using that drive and unplugged the USB hub and lo and behold, no crashes.

I’ll add back one thing at a time to see if I can narrow it down.
