System freezes

Hello.

Today I found that my openSUSE 12.3 started to freeze after some time I’ve logged in. It freezes only when I work with graphic interface (logged in through KDM, work in KDE, tried FVWM2 — all the same).

My laptop is Samsung RC730.

Alt+SysRq keys works fine, by the way.

The last update was yesterday, and the most significant package was xorg-x11-server. I tried to roll back to previous version (I downloaded it from the main openSUSE repository), but the system still hangs.

I looked in logs (/var/log/messages — the session that ended with a hang, — and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old) but I cannot find any strange line that could be a cause.

Today I tried to find out the problem, but I could not.

I deleted bumblebee and NVidia proprietary drivers, reinstalled xorg-x11-server, Mesa* packages but it didn’t help.

As for actions that could lead to hang I cannot even guess what are they. None of freezes were not during a certain action.

Also I have not changed any setting of my laptop BIOS.

The system works good in the safe mode.

So, I just want to ask — does anyone have any idea what’s wrong with my system and what’s a cure?

Did you already try this
https://www.suse.com/releasenotes/i386/openSUSE/12.3/RELEASE-NOTES.en.html#idm1262519932

Thank you for response.

No, I haven’t tried, but I am a member of video group and I’m not using any proprietary NVIDIA driver for the moment.

You mentioned about bumblebee so take a look at this
https://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/hardware/486182-bumblebee-problem.html#post2550099

I thought so (that problem is in bumblebee and NVIDIA proprietary drivers), but nope.

The next things I tried to do for the moment:
I started an empty session (previously KDE loaded a stored one) and system does not freezes. Also if I left login screen, it won’t freezes the system.

I opened Chromium and started to google about my problem for a while, but the system was stable. And than I decided to try to open any video — to try how 3D applications affects the Xorg server. I opened youtube and click on video, and Xorg freezes in few seconds it’ started. I tried it few times, and that’s it.

I even can connect to my PC via ssh after the freeze and can work well, but on PC is a picture of dead (frozen) Xorg. I looked through log files again, and cannot find nothing. Not /var/log/messages, nor /var/log/Xorg.0.log tells me anything useful.

Does anyone have give me a clue where to find the key of problem, if the problem in 3D (if it is)?

From Xorg.0.log I see that both intel and nouveau drivers are loaded. Could it be the problem? But I’m not sure, because I had not changed xorg.conf, so things probably did as thy do it now, and both drivers were loaded.

Can you switch to a different virtual console ( ctrl + alt + f1-f12) when your computer freezes? Try reading /home/your_username/.xsession-errors when its frozen.

Thank you!

I totally forgot about this file.

No, I cannot switch to console, but I can read .xsession](http://pastebin.com/dRtUjKzp) error via ssh.

I do not see what exactly the problem, but I’ll try to analyze the file.

Also in Xorg.0.log there are a lot of such kind of lines:

[Xi] Too many valuators reported for device 'Virtual core pointer'. Ignoring event.

But I cannot find what does it mean.

I’d loggen in in FVWM2, not in KDE, but the system got frozen again. So it looks like not Plasma bug.

Here is a small .xsession-errors I’ve got for this session:

/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started.sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD

I ran Eclipse, bunch of xterms and Chromium web browser.

Still a lot of

[Xi] Too many valuators reported for device 'Virtual core pointer'. Ignoring event.

in Xorg.0.log.

You could try to create a new linux user account and see if your laptop still crashes while using this clean profile. This way you know if its something in your users profile or the system itself.

Result is the same.

Hello.

It looks like I found the answer. Maybe it’s not a great decision, but it lets me work, and as I use bumblebee (NVIDIA Optimus technology), this decision is not critical.

So, maybe it’ll be a good idea to include this issue to openSUSE support database.

If I face with the problem I described in the beginning of the topic, I’ll post it here.

I am having the same issue of hanging system on my laptop which I travel with. I am currently in the Philippines with basically an unusable openSUSE release. I do not use Bumblebee, and have no wish or need to do so. I was hoping this post to turn off Acceleration would solve my issue. Unfortunately it did not and the system still freezes. I am using Windows at the moment since the laptop is configured for dual boot.

There’s got to be an easier way to handle this situation. Hopefully, they will have built in kernel smarts to deal with this like Windows seems to have since most new higher end laptops have hardware configurations like this. I will probably revert the laptop back to 12.2 when I return home as I never had the issue in that release.

It looks like this solution is not for your case if your laptop configuration is described in your signature:

Dell XPS-15 | Intel i7-2720QM | openSUSE 12.3 X86_64 | 8GB Ram | NVidia GT525M | KDE 4.10.1

Probably you do not have an Intel graphic card, so you, sure, do not need to use Bumblebee. Bumblebee is not a key of the issue I described in this topic — even when I removed all NVIDIA and Bumblebee stuff my system was still got frozen.

The question is: which driver do you use for your NVIDIA card?

If you use proprietary driver, you should probably check whether your user is in video group. Just type

$ groups

If video group is not listed — add your user to this group:

$ sudo /usr/sbin/usermod -a -G video username

and then re-login.

I have the proprietary NVIDIA driver loaded. The issue is when the system boots and I check which driver is being used, it is the intel driver, not the NVIDIA. I am added to the video group, that was one of the first things I had read about and tried. It’s like when the system boots up it only recognizes the on board video and not the additional optional NVIDIA card I ordered with the system.
