System freezes when trying to switch user

Hi chaps,

I have OpenSuSe 11.2 64-bit installed on my HP Compaq 6730s laptop. When I’m trying to switch user black screen appears and my system does not react on any key combinations (ctrl+alt+del; ctrl+alt+F7 …). This was not reproduced before ATI driver installation.

Any ideas?

uname -a

Linux xela 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2009-10-26 15:49:03 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Here several possibly useful logs which were updated after an attempt to switch user:

kdm.log

Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm’s internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

Forgot to specify Desktop Environment system - KDE 4.3.1 “release 6”

Does somebody have an idea?

I experienced the same problem today. Apparently there are no critical message in system logs (at least in the files I examined on the System Log Viewer). Text consoles Ctrl-Alt.F2-6 are not responsive. Ctrl-Alt-Canc as well. The only way to unlock the laptop is to keep the power button pressed until it shuts down. This seems to be a serious (kernel?) freeze issue because I also tried to connect via ssh shell to the freezed computer from another computer in the same local network and the connection failed.
I have openSUSE 11.2 installed on a Dell Studio 17 laptop. Desktop environment is Gnome 2.28.2.
If anyone can tell me what is the procedure to follow to debug this problem and especially where to look for error messages I can try to reproduce the bug and report it in the correct way.

Hi,

giannisuse67, do you also have ATI video card? If so which exactly? Do you use desktop effects?

I think this can be driver bug.

Hi gumkins, I have an ATI Radeon HD 3650 video card. Compiz is not enabled. I installed also Ubuntu 9.10 on another partition of my hard disk with the ATI proprietary driver and the bug effect is the same: system freeze. I gave up searching for a solution since I never use the user switch functionality. I’m the only user on this PC. However it is annoying to know that this bug is not fixed.

IIRC there’s an option that should be activated in your xorg.conf

Please also take a look in Xorg.0.log, and in the users .xsession-errors.
