System freezes after Update from 11.2 to 11.3

Hi,

i have running more than 50 servers with openSUSE 11.2 for a long time without any problems. After upgrading 30 server to 11.3 some of them are freeezing after one or two days. I can ping, but i cannot log in. At the console i can type in the user and the nothing happens, system has to reboot.

All servers are Hewlett Packard Proliant G4,G5,G6 with 32bit and 64bit. No errors or hints in the systemlog.

Any ideas?

video cards? Are they running with X going?

And did you really throw a new os at 30 working servers before testing on just one or two??

Different video cards: ATI Mach64 GR, ATI ES1000 515E. i do not use X, but it seems that some x packages are installed. i have installed them in tex-only mode.

the test was o.k. on the server i installed 11.3 first. the problem is, that i do not have 30 different test server hardware as they are running in produktion… after that issue it stopped the updating process…

there are only 2 or 3 server which are freezing…

bye
Daniel

what makes those 2 or 3 different from all the ones not freezing?

video?
G4, G5, or G6?
32 or 64bit?

they are different:

DL360 G4p 64bit ATI Mach64 GR
DL360 G4p 32bit ATI Mach64 GR
DL380 G6 64bit ATI ES1000 515E

and i have servers with the same hardware not freezing… but it seems to be a problem obviously with the G4p

do you have DL360 G4p 64bit with other than ATI graphics freezing?

> DL360 G4p 32bit ATI Mach64 GR

do you have DL360 G4p 32bit with other than ATI graphics freezing?

do you have DL380 G6 64bit with other than ATI graphics freezing?

are you running the open source graphics driver in all your ATI
machines, or what?

sorry i can’t just tell you what the problem is!!

maybe if you experiment with the methods available herein you will
solve the problems: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_graphics_cards

well…it may not be a graphics problem at all…do you have
variance in hardware age, loading, cooling, power perturbations, etc
etc etc ?

please let us know how you get on (so the next person with your
problem can know what worked, or not)

well, sorry i failed to ask a MOST important question (because i
assumed you had already done this and found nothing extraordinary):

any hints in your logs? (especially hints occurring in all the
freezing machine’s logs and not in the non-freezing machine’s)

No, that is the problem, there are no entries in the log. but once is the same on all servers. when i try to log in i can enter the user and after hitting the enter key the password line did not appear. same happens over ssh.

no, i don’t have other servers with other than ATI graphics. All servers have ATI graphics. But they didn’t freez.

i think so. i use all default drivers from the installation disk.

i’ll try this.

Yes, of course, the systems are different in age, loading and hardware…

Sure…

unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of folks having problems with
freezes, you might look through these and see if you can pick up any
tips http://tinyurl.com/25cskfo
