Is there a way to figure out what causes a system freeze? I’ve never had this happen before I reinstalled openSUSE on my desktop. I usually leave it running at all times, but since the new install, after a few days of being idle and the screen saver running it will just be frozen. Mouse movement does nothing, keystrokes do nothing, I can’t ctrl+alt+backspace. The screensaver is GL Matrix & I’m running compiz-fusion. Is there a log that I can post & someone can help me decipher what the problem may be? Thanks In advance for your help!
PS. My desktop in oS 11, KDE3.5.9, kernel 2.6.25.13-0.1pae i686, P4 2.8 GHz, 1 GB Ram, ATI Radeon RV280 5961

Turn it off if you are not using it.
Or, at the very least let powersave automatically turn it off.
Same for screensaver–turn it off and save the CPU cycles.
CPU Cycles = energy consumpition → carbon emisions → Polar bears dying.
By the way, just what is your computer doing for days just sitting there idle?
Nothing meaningful? Just using fuel? Do you also leave the refrigerator door
open? Or car running. How about the faucet–does it run all day too? All the
lights and TV on 24x7. How about the porch light, is it also on all the time?
Maybe you run the air conditioner in the winter and heater in the summer–or,
both year around?
Turn it off if not being used–you save money by lower utility bills, and help
all on this spaceship earth in the process.
I had a similar problem and it was due to the open GL screensaver. I found out by connecting to the “frozen” pc via ssh and running top. It show that the screensaver was taking up 99% of CPU. Killing that process restored the frozen PC. I have been using a blank screensaver for the last couple of weeks to see if the problem re-occurs. Was very intermittant and would not show for a week or so.
Thank you all for your input. You’re right, I’m not doing my part with leaving the computer running. I’m just full of excuses as to why I leave it running. I did shut down beagle, I really don’t use it at all. As far as reisrerfs, I’ve never even heard of it. I guess I’ve got some reading to do! I did shut down compiz, and the problem persists. So next step, change screensaver and hibernate when not in use. I’ll try changing the screensaver first, just to see if that fixes the problem.
Also, does anyone know of a good stress test software. I’d lie to push my system to the limits and really see what its made of. Maybe I’d even lie to venture into overclocking, which is a whole other posting all together.

Alright! Sorry it took so long for me to post back. On the most recent system freeze, I tried to reboot and nothing. So, I assumed that I would need a new HD. I felt like messing with it a little bit before I spent any money & sure enough, bad RAM. Took that out and no more freezes. So, it looks like it wasn’t a software problem at all. Thanks again for everyone’s help!
