system does not close properly ....... snapd?

Las one has been not when shutting down but when doing a logout. Screen went black and nothing did respond, so I had to switch off with the button.

So it seems it something about the graphics card

I am not an expert, but this is well known behavior: kernel: NVRM: GPU at PCI:0000: - Google Suche

Yes, it seems so. I have found that there are different kinds of errors

https://docs.nvidia.com/deploy/xid-errors/index.html

In my case

andromeda kernel: **NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:07:00): 16, Head 00000001 **

Error 7 → Invalid or corrupted push buffer address
Causes:
*Driver Error
*Bus Error
*FB Corruption

This is the drivers I’m using.

andromeda:~ # dmesg | grep NVRM
12.163687] NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 390.144 Wed Jun 2 23:02:41 UTC 2021 (using threaded interrupts)

The solving method in one of the links will work, of course " I had an extra, identical video card but this one produced the same freezes and NVRM messages as the old one. In fact, I’m running VMware and my vmware.log complained of a bug in the 340.98 drivers and strongly suggested that I upgrade to newer drivers! So, I conclude that the NVRM messages listed above are due to buggy drivers rather than buggy hardware (as suggested by Hu, below). I bought a newer card which uses the latest drivers, 375.26, and have had no problems nor NVRM messages for three months." but if it is a driver issue I want to try to solve it by software rather than buying a new hardware.

Searching in the nvidia page drivers fot Geforce GT 630 I find that the recomended driver is

Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T) Display Driver. Version: 470.86 - Date: Wed Nov 10, 2021

Which is more recent that the one I have installed, but over all is a different one. The 470.86 matches G05 no G04. I don’t remember why I have G04 but I think I found somewhere that it was the right choice for my card … I will try G05.

I did change to nvidia-glG05. It didn’t work. I have two monitors at full-hd. With G05 just one of them was working and the resolution was 1280x1024 (no other available). Desktops effects didn’t work either.

So I reinstalled G04 and I’m making more test.
With a ssh session opened from another computer I have been changing from the graphical session to another (cntrl-alt-F2) when working with the system freshly powered on It works, but after a while it “hangs”, one screen go black the other remains with the picture of my desktop

…but the ssh session continues working. I was doing in the ssh session

**andromeda:~ #** journalctl -b -f

and the last two lines after the cntrl-alt-F2 were

[FONT=monospace]Nov 21 23:49:29 andromeda kernel: **nvidia-modeset: WARNING: GPU:0: Lost display notification (0:0x00000000); continuing.**
Nov 21 23:49:53 andromeda kernel: **nvidia-modeset: ERROR: GPU:0: Idling display engine timed out: 0x0000857d:0:0**

Then in the computer nothing worked nor keyboad nor mouse, but the ssh session from the other computer continue working. The fan got more speed. I did a top and saw that three processes were using each 100% CPU: X, kwin_x11 and plasmashell

I tried to kill the plasma session or X or sddm… to see if the computer returned to a sddm screen but nothing. Then i did a reboot from the ssh login. The ssh died, the coputer stop responding to a ping but didn’t shut down, so I did reset it with the reset button. When watching the log after the reset it seems it did the shutdown almost well (it killed the processes, unmounted the filesystems…) except it didn’t power off.

I don’t know if relevant, but on the Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen-9 tablet (only Intel CPU and no nvidia hardware) there is/was an issue, where upon shutdown the laptop GNU/Linux would shutdown, but the laptop power would not switch off. This issue did not exist for MS-Windows. This issue existed for me on LEAP-15.3 and also for Fedora, Ubuntu, and other GNU/Linux users as reported in the Lenovo Linux forum. The solution that has worked for all the distros (best I understand from reading the Lenovo threads on this), was a kernel update, where the 5.14.11 kernel (and newer) fixed this issue.

I obtained the upgraded the kernel from the backport/stable repos, where at present the 5.14.11 kernel is no longer there. Instead it is up to a 5.15.3 kernel which I have not tried.

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable:/Backport/standard/

I do not know if that is similar behaviour on your device (based on your description) nor do I know if a kernel upgrade would work for you.

Of course with nvidia hardware, where you may be using nvidia graphic drivers, a kernel upgrade could bring new graphic driver issues for you - so a kernel upgrade may not be a solution.

I have read something about it, but all seems related to intel.
I have removed nvidia drivers and I’m working with nouveau, the issue dissapeared. I can power off the system and it doe not hang, although I have some graphical issues, like some flashing of the screen sometimes and vmware does not work (it returns a vga panic), so It seems something is wrong with the vga… maybe is a hardware issue.
