I performed a new install of suse 12.1 via network install. after performing all the updates, every time I launch Yast, my system comes to a screeching halt. Suse is in a dual boot environment, with WinXP on sdb1, Suse on sdb2. Grub installed on the mbr of sdb1. sdb1 is 250gb, sdb2 is 500gb. I prefer working in suse, but I can’t deal with my system screeching to a halt every time I launch Yast. Any suggestions/ideas? I am not a newbie, nor am I an expert.
So when you say that your system halts after running YaST, does that mean it otherwise boots up OK and allows you to enter your password? Which desktop did you select KDE or GNOME? Is this a 32 or 64 bit installation? Can you tell us more about your hardware, make , brand, memory and so forth. Can you run anything else like Firefox or even a small game of some sort?

The entire desktop halts? Nothing moves? Or only Yast stops?
Which desktop?
As yast doesn’t work, you might attempt to update your system using “zypper patch”.
