I got a new Sony Vaio laptop the other day and just installed OpenSuSE 12.1. By default it ships with an intel graphics card which I’m using now, but I also added an ATI card to it (radeon 6300 series I think). Both cards are detected, Yast hardware shows both cards are operational and have drivers loaded, but I’m currently only using the intel card. Can someone please explain how I’m supposed to switch to the ATI card? I’ve been searching the forums, but I can’t seem to find any threads for this topic. I see threads for getting cards detected, but none that simply explain how to switch cards.
I think you’ll need to investigate using vgaswitcheroo.
Thanks for the link. I read it over and it helps a lot. Here’s another question I need to find an answer for. I think the easiest solution would be to totally disable the ATI card, as any gaming would be done in windows. How would I go about temporarily removing support for the ATI card so that on startup it ignores the ATI card and only finds the intel?
Only one chipset is active at a time, and it is not usually possible to completely disable the unwanted chipset with hybrid graphics, unless there is provision within the BIOS to do so. So, even though the ATI graphics chipset may be powered, the X-server will ony be using the intel chipset say. Linux support for this technology is extremely limited, as the vendors have not provided the support required.
Okay. Thanks for the info. I’m going to just use the ATI card since there’s a lot of technical stuff required with vgaswitcheroo that I don’t feel comfortable with. Thanks for the help.

Does your Sony Vaio have the ability to disable the graphics chipset in the BIOS?
