Switching from Ubuntu

Trying to make the move here…looking for a more stable, safer, solid OS for my home desktop. Ubuntu has become a 6 month show -business and I feel I need something more stable now. I also like the idea of having a solid firewal and antivirus (apparmor) by default, as in opensuse (although I am not sure that they add any strenght to the base linux system). The same reason why I will probably pick gnome over kde 4.
I just need to have my printer/scanner working as it does inmy ubuntu install.
I will need to install the brother drivers by myself.I need access to console/terminal but I just can not find it. I am using opensuse 11.2 gnome. Can anybody tell me where in yast or control panel is the console link located?
2. For how long will this release be supported?
3. Will upgrade to future releases require installation from a cd/dvd or it will support online/over the internet upgrade (as in ubuntu)?
4. How to change the fonts in firefox tomake them look like in window? Anybody nows the name of the fonts that best fit that bill?
Thanks in advance.

AppArmor is not an antivirus tool. Please read. AppArmor - openSUSE
What’s the cycle of life? About 2 years. Frequently Asked Questions - openSUSE
Future releases as I understand it will be like distupgrade.
YaST is not where you find terminal. Terminal is found, in KDE, Start (openSUSE Icon)>Applications>System>Terminal.
Antivirus is clamav and is not need for Linux. The only reason for anti-virus is to scan Windows machines.

In Gnome, the terminal is located under Computer -> More applications.

how do you find terminal/console in gnome 11.2?

I need help installing the linux brother driver. I downloaded the drivers from their web page. I followed their intructions, but every time I run the commands in the terminal I don’t get the thing to work.
I am not good in the terminal. I need to guide me through this please. How to install the drivers, considering that they are downloaded to the downloads folder by default.
P.D. I google it but did not find answers. I managed to install the drivers in ubuntu, therefore it should be possible.

Have you tried the Hardware forum section? Also, some information of what you have tried and the results would be helpful.

Yeah. To the op try starting a thread in the hardware section, there you have a good chance someone can assist you with the printer.
Welcome to the forum.

Good move weverjames.
My friend’s calls me distro junkie some times because I always download new release of linux distro’s and try in virtual mode or in plain install mode.

OpenSuSe is my all time fav distro. It has exellent drivers support. Till now I never spent time to configure/compile drivers for hardware device[s] in OpenSuSe.

When some1 writes in his resume he has configured squid proxy and some interview taker bounces his eye brows by thinking may be a tricky task but for me it took only 15~20 mins to configure squid proxy in my office!! I removed flaky r@d hat :stuck_out_tongue: which took so much time to install dependancies for squid then squid package itself

OpenSuSe repo’s are good and easy to update/download softwares via Yast or Zapper. Most repo links are available always. Very bad thing I dislike about UBUNTU they disabled root user by default. When we install OS we agree terms & they dont have to worry about root account :stuck_out_tongue:

Only good thing in UBUNTU may be that 1 can install in on a space left on NTFS file systen & no need to create partitions when more than 1 OS exists on single HDD. I still remember I used my SonyEricsson Z710i phone to connect to OpenSuSe 10.x version and to use GPRS. It was simply amazing. SuSe installed device drivers and asked me to configure modem. Fewer times only it failed like 10.2 SuSe failed to install video driver for my ATi Radeon X1300 graphic card in laptop.

Wine was/is simply plug n play in OpenSuSe. Although I am a newbie kind of had no problem to use wine. in other distro’s I ended by installing lot of dependacies. :expressionless:

Welcome to OpenSuSe world

 100% true!
