If I read comment 14 correct it was enough to switch from gdm to kdm and
instead ov ipv6 use ipv4, did you try that or do you want to switch the
desktop completely from gnome to kde anyway?
As a addon, I run both desktops on my laptop with 11.3 where gnome installed
during system install (and is used as my main DE) and installed kde later
with yast, no problems with this which I can see until now.
So it should be straight forward for you.
Go to yast chnge the selection to patterns and use kde4 base system (hope
this is coreect enough translated to find it my system is in german).
yast -> system -> /etc/sysconfig editor
desktop -> displaymanager -> DISPLAYMANGER
choose kdm and save

I described in the previous post what you need to switch it will not
uninstall gnome so you can use both desktop environments).
If vnc access is your only problem and you want to keep gnome, why not
switch to another remote access to your desktop, what about NX?
Dear Martin
I apologize that I did not read your second post before replying and yes, I would consider another kind of remote desktop access.
I refer to switching desktop manager but in fact what I actually mean is to use mainly kde while having them both installed, in the secret hope that while deploying I could switch back to gnome thus avoiding the confusion to the users that already think they’ll have gnome.
Since what I need is allow them to remotely edit a number of documents, the list of options I see as a secondary choice are very limited. For example, if I run remote desktops rather than tightvnc, still have the gnome ipv6 issue.
I never tried out NX, but… may be this is the right time to do it. I’ll let you know!
Thanks!

You can try freenx (a package is available on the build service) which does
not have this limitation, I used it for several years without much trouble
instead of nomachine nx server (but have no experience with the current
version).
