I have converted 3 of my systems to mate with out issue. I have been trying to switch my main desktop and it will not switch. I went into /etc/sysconfig using yast and checked everything.
At the login I choose MATE and I still end up at the xfce desktop. I have searched for others who have run into this but found none that even come close to this issue with everything set correctly.
Any ideas why it will not let me use the installed MATE desktop?
Do you have a .xinitrc file ? It could contain an overwrite (“exec startxfce4” or something similar)
You’ll probably need to try to identify what’s different comparing your successful vs your unsuccessful, eg
What was/is the original Desktop… Are they the same or different?
What was/is the Display Manager that’s being used in the original Desktop (Maybe manually switch to whatever MATE prefers before trying to do the Desktop switch)? Use YAST > System > /etc/sysconfig/ editor > Desktop > Display manager to display and change Display Managers.
