Switch user

I didn’t see it in previous messages so I will ask: In some previous versions you could login as another user while suspending, or putting to background, the user that was in use. The switch user option of leave is no longer there in 12.1. Is there a way to put to background the current user (that is connected to the terminal, keyboard, and mouse) and login as another user? This would allow to switch from one user to another by some keystroke (or some such).

i’m not perfectly sure i understand your question:

-do you mean you wish to switch from one user to another and both
interact with the system in a GUI, at the same time, from the same
keyboard etc…taking turns so to speak at the keyboard and both able to
go to their own session with some keystrokes?

that used to be possible (with “startx – :1” which could have a GUI at
Ctrl+Alt+F7 and another at Ctrl+Alt+F8), but i don’t know how now that a
regular user can’t use startx)

or

-do you mean you wish to log in as yourself, and while active as
yourself in one desktop instance, leave that instance running and active
and then switch to another user in a command line environment?

and, would in either of those cases would any user be root?

hmmmmm…you write “The switch user option of leave is no longer there
in 12.1.”

as far as i know it has long been the case that one first selects
“Leave” and then to switch users click “Logout” (rather than “Turn off
computer” or Restart computer")…Logout then leads to the opportunity
to log in as any other user–did that change in 12.1 in your desktop??
(i’ve not seen that change, so i ask what desktop environment are you
using?)

I have 12.1 kde 4.8.4 and I see (sorry for the german words, I translate
it) “Abmelden” = logout, “Sperren” = lock and “Benutzer wechseln” =
switch user
I tested the latter one now and it still works as in the past (used to
use that years ago on the family PC).

What desktop environment with which version of it are you using?

PC: oS 12.1 x86_64 | i7-2600@3.40GHz | 16GB | KDE 4.8.4 | GeForce GT 420
ThinkPad E320: oS 12.1 x86_64 | i3@2.30GHz | 8GB | KDE 4.8.4 | HD 3000
eCAFE 800: oS 12.1 i586 | AMD Geode LX 800@500MHz | 512MB | KDE 3.5.10

Sorry for the poor descriptions as words sometimes fail me.

First I am using the KDE Desktop.

DD - The first scenario is what I seek. While I am logged in and using the KDE, I find myself wanting to get another KDE instance running, log in and do some work as another user while letting things run in the first instance. So, being able to switch back and forth.

When I press CTRL+ALT+F8 all I get is a black screen and cna press that multiple times and still get an all black screen. Then when I press CTRL+ALT+F7 I return to my initial desktop.

Of course since there is no x session running on the terminal you reach
with CTRL+ALT+F8.
You first need to switch user -> http://susepaste.org/3175536 the green
button with the two arrows on the left side (sorry that this is in
german now)
does that not exist on your system?

i ask again: would in either of those users be root?

That is OK I do understand German a bit.

I rarely get to that selection as I normally right click on a open spot on the desktop. But I do have such a selection.

Can I copy that to the desktop? I have tried through normal means but can’t do it.

Sorry I missed your question. The answer is no.

I do not think that is a normal .desktop entry at least I cannot find it
for doing a copy.
Maybe there is a way to enable that option also for the desktop right
click which I do not know.

as far as i can tell what you want to do (have the ability to have two
different users logged into two different instances of X running in two
different virtual terminals) WAS possible by:

-as UserOne, press Ctrl+Alt+F1
-in the terminal, log in as UserTwo
-the X session of UserOne continues
-as UserTwo issue

startx -- :1

-as UserTwo press Ctrl+Alt-F8 and you land in the new X session
-as UserTwo do work in that new instance of X
-to go to the work of UserOne, press Ctrl+Alt-F7
-and Ctrl+Alt-F8 will still be there with UserTwo

however, that no longer works (here) on openSUSE 11.4, and i don’t know
why other than i know it is no longer possible for a user to issue
startx (and, the why for that i don’t know either)…

i do know that i was able to have two X sessions going in openSUSE 10.3,
and before…

There’s got to be a way… If not, oh well…

Thanks for the help!

Looking at this http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=93734 that
seems to be requested by users at least since KDE 4.4, look at the last
post in the thread, there is ac change user plasmoid mentioned, maybe
that works for you.

· In my 11.4 desktop, it enters a loop.
· In my 11.4 laptop, it fails and I have to kill the script. It complains
about not been able to move the session log file.
· As root it works >;-) so it is a question of permissions. Doing what
the /etc/permissions.local file has on the last line, the trick works
again in my laptop, I have two sessions under a single user, so I’m
probably shooting myself on the foot now :-}

So it means that I have some error with startx in my desktop, and so you
do

However, this method of starting a session is deprecated. The devs want
us not to use that an instead login via the session or login manager. In
fact, somethings do not work properly in gnome and kde if you start a
session via startx, related I think to the session bus (whatever the
proper name is) and things like that. The PGP agent will not work IIRC,
suspending from the session, etc.

The correct manner of starting a second session now is (gnome oS 11.4) to
select logout, and then select “switch user”). KDE will have the
equivalent to this, and 12.1 as well.

That’s how it works here with KDE4. Should work for the OP.

You can still use init5 to start X note must be root

I works for the OP, what is missing is to have that switch user entry in
the right click context menu of the desktop instead of only in the leave
menu (as it was years ago) of the kickoff button.
