suspend on a desktop in 11.4

Hi,

the only tool for that I’ve heard of for that would be “vbetool” (google), but it isn’t in the repository AFAIK.

Sorry I can’t help more!

Lenwolf

Thanks Lenwolf – I’ll try to try it out.

I couldn’t figure it out

Hi,

did you find the man page at vbetool(1) - Linux man page

Also have you tried xset? (xset(1): user preference utility for X - Linux man page)
The dpms flags option looks interesting (I’m only guessing here, have never use that).

Thanks again lenwolf. I had the man page for vbetool. Now I’ve tried the xset in various states in the file 99at +dpms and -dpms. No result.

SOLVED: I have a solution that might help some nVidia users:

My machine loaded the “nouveau” drivers by default. I knew they were sub-par for my nVidia card, but adequate, and I resolved to try the proprietary drivers from nVidia when the openSUSE 11.4 repo came on line.

Well I just noticed the Community repo for nVidia in 11.4 is now online.

So I switched to those drivers and now suspend to RAM works and also hibernate works.

[No more trials followed by hard reboots accompanied by messages about recovering the journal, must have seen that 20/30 times with fingers crossed]

So google01103, that might work for you too?

Do I need to first remove the self compiled drivers? Why would the rpms be better than what I compile? Well I guess we’ll find out

  • be back in a few

swerdna

gave it a go - first ran uninstall with Nvidia installer then installed the Nvidia rpms and it is a bit better but not right

  • suspend, now the monitor and the mouse turn off (didn’t earlier) but still the pc itself is still running with fans blowing and opticals open and closing. The pc turns back on with keyboard activity which I thought wasn’t right and the power button blinks as it should but it doesn’t actually suspend.
  • hibernate still works but it has never been an issue for me

Strange that the monitor now sleeps but didn’t when I compile - would have thought there would be no difference between the 2.

I can’t think of anything for you to do, sorry.
Except perhaps check you have these drivers revealed when you run “/usr/sbin/hwinfo --gfxcard”

Driver: “nvidia”
Driver Modules: “nvidia”

XFree86 v4 Server Module: nvidia

Hi swerdna,

What is the version of your driver now ?

I no longer have the nvidia RPMs installed because I have updated the distro to Tumbleweed which requires a reinstall of the nVidia drives from source rather than from RPMs. I had to blacklist nouveau. The sleep and suspend modes survived that process and still work well. Here’s the results from hwinfo

I have been using open Suse for about 5yrs. I have a Dell Dimension 4600, 32 bit. There is a bug in the 11.4 version which causes the screen to go black when it is inactive. I have disabled the screen saver and told it never to hibernate. Sometimes it works, but eventually, it goes black. At that point, the only thing I can do is cut the power and reboot. This is a major problem and I lam thinking of trying another distribution. However, I am not that proficient in linux and like the YAST feature. The standby light is always on on the front of the computer, but it never wakes up.
