Suse13.2 wireless installation

I have two systems. System 1 is connected wired to the router. System 2 is 40 meters away and needs to be connected via wi-fi.

In trying to install SuSE13.2 onto the wireless (wifi) system, but I am unable to configure the modem. The USB modem is recognized, the screen prompt appears and I am asked to enter the BSID. I know about the SSID but then…

I then booted another system, took down the SSID “Dlink - Josh” and noted the URL 192.168.0.1/20. The router uses wap and that other systems’ installation program completes the set-up. I i use a valid password phrase and that is as far as I get. I respond yes for DHCP, and when through testing all the options that failed, I responded no to DHCP, and go through more modem configuration testing.

In the end, it was defeat. Can one actually do a wi-fi installation with SuSE13.2?

With a wired connection on this first system, the one I am using for this posting, SuSE13.2 installation worked superbly. That is why I want to install it on the second system.

By the way, on the system with wifi, Mint, Fedora, Centos, Ubuntu, all have a setup step in the installation process where the WIFI SSIDs are listed, we choose the correct one, provide the password and then we proceed with completing the installation.

Is there a program that I can run on a working distribution that will tell me what modem parameters I have to enter when I start the SUSE13.2 installation?

Will SuSE13.2, once installed onto a third system, a laptop, have an easy to setup wifi configuration when I visit a public wi-fi area?

Which program are you using wicked or Networkmanager???

Hello lsatenstein,

i’m not quite sure wether i understand correctly what you tried to do:

How did you start the installation? Did you use the NET-installer (http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/13.2/iso/openSUSE-13.2-NET-x86_64.iso) ?

Did you try a “fresh” install or did you try to update an existing system?

I do not understand what you did here (Did you start a system, which is already installed on the machine you want to put openSUSE 13.2 on or did you start an openSUSE-LIVE-system?) but i guess you just wanted to gain the necessary information (SSID, IP, …) from your WiFi-network.

Several years ago, i did a NET-install using the NET-install-CD from the openSUSE repository. As far as can remeber the installer gave me the opportunity to set up the access to my network and i could install via network.

With the SUSE13.2 Flash drive, I boot it. There is not really a full operating system there-on. It boots a very minimal system that needs network access in order to pull down the installation files. On a wired system, this action goes ahead flawlessly.

On a wireless system, It asks for Essid, (My router is “Dlink - Josh”). I know the pass phrase, but I want to get the network working so I can perform an installation. That computer is about 40 meters away from the router. I did an ifconfig with a second distribution that I have on that system and this is what I got.

inet 192.168.0.107
nmask 255.255.255.0 (I think this means /24 )
broadcast 192.168.0.255
Def Route 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.1

Is the ssid the same as essid?

There is no network manager. Just the coloured x terminal interface.

Do I physically have to relocate the system to a wired connection in order to perform an installation?

Hello lsatenstein,

for a better understanding of the network terms you might want to read this: Service set (802.11 network) - Wikipedia

I think you should be able to install via your wireless connection. All you need is the SSID and your passphrase. To find out the SSID of your network you can use this (LINUX-)command (as user “root”):

# iwconfig
enp6s0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

wlp3s0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"**THIS_IS_WHAT_YOU_NEED**"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:5.18 GHz Access Point: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
          Bit Rate=120 Mb/s Tx-Power=14 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=44/70 Signal level=-66 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:35 Missed beacon:0

Sorry to be a reluctant idiot but

If you wish to understand what I am experiencing, take your 13.2 boot flash, remove the wired connection, insure that you have a wifi modem on your system, and go through the steps to install SUSE onto your system, stopping, of course, before you make permenant changes.
At some point (based on my experience), you will be shown the wireless device id and the wireless one. Select the wireless one.

My experience.
At this point, software prompts me for essid, which I presume is the ssid and I reply
“Dlink - Josh” (without the " characters).

I am asked if I want to use dhcp to obtain my interface address and I reply affirmative.
I also introduce my pass phrase.

I go through the settings (different trials) as shown in my previous post. No luck.
Then I try to make the modem work without resolting to dhcp and I try the addresses one by one.
No luck, I can’t configure the modem interface.

Because I can’t configure the modem interface, I can’t perform the installation.

What’s on that system?
Three hard disks,
One has Fedora 21
One has Mint 17
and one disk is reserved for SUSE. That is the one to which I am trying to install.

From what I understand, I downloaded a network installation iso file which will boot a very minimal Linux, and after the modem is functional, the pre-installer will download 5 Suse13.2 installation files. If I get those, then the installation will proceed and run to completion.

Since I cannot get the modem to operate, I can’t complete the installation.
Is there a full DVD image of SUSE13.2? The Modem interface software on that DVD must hopefully be able to work the same as other distributions.

Why do I want SuSE when I have alternatives?
I read a review article comaring SUSE and Fedora and the author summed up the review by stating that he still preferred SUSE to Fedora.

I installed SUSE on a system that is wired to the router. A system whics is other than the above one with the problem, and I am impressed with the quality of the graphics rendering, in the accuracy (bug free) situation of the code, and with a positive impression. My impression is that SUSE’s Linux kernel appears pruned with some removed archaic not required stuff, such as ARM, or other stuff. SUSE appears snappier in action. (I am using the Gnome version, with a half dozen tweaks). On my main system Suse is functionally configured identically to Fedora21 (same applications). SUSE fills snappier, faster, perhaps its because the modules have been provided without debug code therein.

So, can we help me to install SUSE on the above system? Can we point me to a DVD download link?

Net installer was used.

Sure just go to the openSUSE download page and select which installer you want. I’m not sure where you got a net install and missed the full DVD???

Also you could temporally connect to a wired connection to make the install. Your Wireless may require additional drivers.

I downloaded the live CD version, modem setup was quick, easy and painless. I noted that all was well. I clicked to install, and voila, I am connected.

I did follow the links to examine modem setup. I could not get the setting instructions to work for me so here I am.

I am appreciative of the help I got to install 13.1
