-=WELCOME=- new poster…until you say otherwise i will assume you to be
a Linux guru just getting familiar with openSUSE

ok, are you saying when you click the screen goes black right then?
if so, read and follow here: http://tinyurl.com/23mgej6

if that doesn’t help come back and say so…

you may also have a bad install disk, did you do this before pressing
Install: http://tinyurl.com/3qde66h ?? if not do that, if you get an
error come back and say so…or just go here and see if you can’t fix
it: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Download_help

even if you are a seasoned veteran of many years with Red Hat, Debian or
Aix, you will probably find some very useful info here:

and, do you have particular reason to install 11.4 instead of the
latest, 12.1?

Thanks for your help but I am not a Linux guru. I am a novice to it just trying to get use to it and also use it for my research.

Tried all the options indicated but none worked for me.

Tell us of your hardware. Does this laptop happen to have multiple different brand graphic cards??

Well am not really sure about it having a multiple different brand graphic cards. I can only say that its a hp pavilion dm4

please realize that we can neither see your screen nor read you mind,
and so far what you have told us is not very much.

you are booting from an install disk, right?

you said when you click on install it goes dark…

but, what does that mean? are you saying you boot from the install disk
and a screen looking a bit like this http://tinyurl.com/3qde66h (if you
are using a DVD) or this http://tinyurl.com/455hbml (if using a Gnome
Live CD–KDE is similar) comes up and waits for you to make a decision??

and when you use the arrow keys to select “Installation” (or point and
click with the mouse) then (right then) the screen goes black and stays
that way? when the screen is black, do you see a mouse pointer? can you
move it? or, in the upper left hand corner is there a white _ (underline
character)?

so, now i will assume you booted to the first green screen and selected
“Installation” and see a solid black screen, and nothing else…so i
want you to reboot and NOT select “Installation” but rather select
“Check Installation Media” and let that run:

  • does the screen turn solid black again? or,
  • does the checking program run and give you a result?
  • what does it say? do you have an error, or does it check good?

if it checks bad return here and tell us exactly what it said.

if it checks good, reboot and at that first green screen do this

  • type
nomodeset

then

  • select “Installation” and press the enter key
  • describe what happens this time…

if you still get a black screen come back and tell us that along with
information about your hardware:

we want to help you, but we can’t guess what you are doing or what you
are seeing…

like, sometime people boot a Live CD and select “openSUSE Live GNOME” or
“openSUSE Live KDE” and then when the live desktop comes up they click
on the icon on the desktop named “Install”…if you are doing that, don’t!

like, some are running windows, and while running windows they put the
install disk in the machine and windows starts it up, and they click
Install or Installation or whatever–if you are doing that, don’t!

hoping to hear more from you…

Okay, here I will try to be more explicit.
After downloading the live CD for GNOME I tried to installing it on my laptop which has a capacity of 600GB, but I partitioned it into two 450GB which is running Windows 7 and 150GB where I am planning to have the suse running. But after booting from the CD, I have this screen Picasa Web Albums - carl fletcher - 11.4_Install but I didn’t chose the check installation media, rather I went directly to install and there the screen will go dark, if I look close enough to the screen I can barely see the mouse moving and can even select some of the option but that’s not something trustworthy cos I don’t have to whole story on whats really going on.
Now from your last post I tried your suggestions that is to select the Check Media Installation, but this time the screen is totally dark, what I mean is even if I look close enough I would not see the mouse moving so that can make you understand that I there was no return of like good or bad.

I am having a hp pavilion dm4
600GB hard drive
4.00GB RAM
so it means the requirements here: Hardware requirements - openSUSE

Thanks and hope thats clear this time and thanks for your help

Come on, that’s what the LiveCD’s are for. Used it many times, from CD as well as from a homemade USB-installer and it works. One of the great things about it is, that you can actually see whether your hardware works with the openSUSE version, since the LiveCD uses the same kernel etc. The problem lies ahead of the install. Yes, I too suspect one of these dual graphics adapter machines, but there are other options to try first.
@OP: what’s the resolution chosen for install, try and pick one that will definitely fit your screen, f.e. 800 x 600, and see if this helps.

the live CD will not install reliably with less than 1 GB of RAM–when
i wrote that the OP hadn’t declared anything about hardware…for all i
could see the problem was a 450 Mhz PIII with 256 MB!!

but, carry on.

I have fixed the issue I had with the installing of Suse11.4. The problem was a resolution or brightness. As I said in my early postings whenever I booted from the CD and selected Install the screen would go dark but if I look close enough I would be able to see (with difficulty) the writings and also the cursor, so I decided to increase the brightness and somehow it worked fine what is left is just for me to select install and follow the step.
Thanks for all your suggestions
