Hi, I have a lenovo desktop pc (WIN7) that I connect to the interrnet with. I have a custom built box (SuSE11.3). I have clear internet service and use a USB modem to connect to the internet. Clear does not make a Linux driver yet… I can connect to the Internet through VMware desktop with SuSE as the guest OS. However, I want to connect my other system to a router and my other PC. Would I be able to access the web with the linux box? I have a free NIC card on both pc’s, I’m just not savvy enough to network them so if anyone could explain or tell me if it is even posssible to network the 2, I would greatly apprecviate it. My goal is to run SuSE on one, WIN7 on the other and access the internet from both. Is this possible?

Does this USB connected modem also have a standard network connection? If it does, then you just need to buy a wired or wireless router, connect your modem to the router WAN input and then connect all PC’s to the wired or wireless access points and allow the router to provide IP addresses to everyone through the router DHCP function.
If you do not have a modem with a standard WAN network connection, you either need to request a new modem with a network connection or you will need to setup the one PC that has the USB modem with internet connection sharing. This PC would have to stay on and connected to the internet to share this connection to another PC. You will still need a network switch or wireless access point. Also, without a DHCP server to provide IP addresses, all PC’s connected together must have a fixed IP address. Using this setup, the PC with the USB modem also needs a wired network connection to connect to a network switch were the rest of the PC(s) also connect. If there was only one other PC, you could connect the two together with a network crossover cable.
I have used internet connection sharing with Windows, but not with Linux before. I must say though I would check with Clear to see if they don’t have a modem with a standard network connection you can get. Wired routers are maybe $50 US, but often you can only find wireless routers at your local stores. As long as they have wired connections as well, it is fine to use them.

Hi James. The USB modem is plugged into the front of my WIN7 Box. I have a wired/wireless router. Is a switch still needed? And as you said I would have to map the IP’s correct? make them static?

I use the term switch instead of hub since almost all network devices that allow you to connect more than one computer together are using the switch function, but it is just a terminology thing anyway. So no, you don’t need anything else EXCEPT, a cable modem that has a network connection to plug into the router directly. If it has only USB connection, then that is a problem, at least you will need Internet connection sharing software on the main PC to do anything else.
