Trying to install SUSE 11.0 on a HP 2530p laptop. The disc boots fine, I get the menu. When you choose install, it locks up almost immediately on “loading drivers…”. It appears the installation doesn’t recognize the SATA CD-ROM. Any other problems you guys may have seen?
Did you do the md5sum check on the iso before burning? And did you do the media check on the DVD menu?
That laptop is certified to work with SUSE Enterprise Desktop 10 (the commercial version of openSUSE). If the media checks out, try this in the Boot Options below on the DVD menu -
No, I didn’t check the md5sum values but the disc was used on another new laptop we received with no problems. I downloaded again just for “grins and giggles”. I’ll give your suggestions a try. I also read that using a USB cd-rom has worked for others. I’ll give that a try also if I have no success.
They (hp) say that the laptop is Suse Desktop Enterprise Certified bla bla.
What does this mean? Can this mean that, if we install openSuse, all will work fine?
I’m looking for an OpenSource alternative to M$. I must decide between Ubuntu and OpenSuse. This could be a turning point, but, if I have no SO capable of working with the laptop, other then M$… well… what can I do?
The primary difference between SLED and openSUSE is the version of the kernel. Occasionally from one kernel version to another a problem arises, although nearly always it can be worked around if necessary - although it may take a bit of search time and patience to find the problem and the workaround. This is essentially what happened with the OP above, i.e., the kernel needed to be instructed not to use a particular function which is not compatible with this machine (that’s what the “Safe Settings” did). It is very likely that the SLED certified version was configured the same way.
The probability is high that openSUSE will work for your machine. Also high that Ubuntu will - they both use nearly the same kernel version. The Live-CD is a good way to check, although sometimes the installation DVD which has greater functionality will work when the CD will not. Or, downsize your Windows partition (Vista can do this) and create a new partition on which to install Linux, and then just try installing - it’s not difficult.
Side note: SLED uses Gnome for its Desktop Environment; openSUSE offers Gnome, KDE 3.5 (mature), and KDE 4.x (very new). There are certainly many differences between Gnome and KDE, especially from the standpoint of the new user.
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, other users have report incompatabilties with this specific notebook 8530p. So I believe the SUSE certificate rised by HP does not tell much. I’m unable to make my own drivers or something, so, if no one is able to do this, a linux system will be unavailable to this laptop? Or, some components of the laptop will be forever unavailable?
I will wait for the laptop to come, and once I have it, I will try the live CD, each issue I report back, and I will wait for solutions… I believe there’s no fast and easy way hm? I’m still not glad with the HP lie telling this was a certificated Suse laptop! :s
Hi
I use SLED on my main system at home it comes with Gnome 2.12 and/or KDE
3.5.1, you can add the SLE SDK then you can have apache2, mysql etc sort
of a SLES system.
Also SLED is not openSUSE… they are different products with very
different life cycles and target audiences. If/when you try SLED on this
device, I suggest you post any problems over in the SLED forums at http://forums.novell.com as these forums are really related to
openSUSE
As an aside, I would try openSUSE first, then hold off on the activation
(which I’m assuming gives you updates for a year) or register at novell.com and get a 3 month temporary activation code to give you time
to sort out any issues, then when that runs out you can use your
original one provided with the device.
SLED 11 should be out by the middle of next year which will be based on
openSUSE 11.

Sure! Despite the fact that HP gives a SED certification (that btw, worths nothing), I intend to use either, openSuse or another free distro from linux.
Thanks a lot for your comments, I will post back when/if I get some results running openSuse on the HP.
I think some people around could be interested with the following link. It is a bunch of repositories that are provided by Novell for the HP products certified for SLED and SLES.
The HP 2530p bios do not see my bootable internal drive !
After googleing I found out that I had to disable the following bios option: "enable the fan while AC is on"
I had the same problem as the OP on my HP Pavillion DV5 machine and i could install OpenSuse by selecting the Safe Settings option. But the problem is that i cant boot into Suse, now that the install is done. I think the problem is the driver of the DVD drive, like the OP has said. Im interested in seeing if the OP had problems booting into SUSE after installing it with safe settings.
I suggest you open a new thread for your problem. If you managed to get openSUSE installed but it does not boot, it is doubtful that the problem is with the DVD (although there could be a related issue with accessing the IDE/PATA or SATA channel the DVD is on, interfering with mounting the root disk partition). It is much more likely the problem is with the boot loader installation and/or setup. So in the new thread describe your problem in as much detail as you can including whether you installed from Live-CD or DVD, and you should get more assistance promptly.
I had similair issues installing volume license version of Xp Pro… so as I was about to smash the laptop on the ground ‘Office Space style’ I looked into the bois setting and saw the under the Device orSystem Configuration, you have to switch the SATA settings to IDE, i know it’s dumb but try that and I bet that it’ll see the HDD.

You’ll want to to use 11.1 (IMHO) and then you’ll want to go into the
bios of the laptop and turn off the option that says run the fan when
plugged into AC.
