Hey!
so, I bought a new laptop - HP Probook 4540s with Suse 11. I installed it, but before I did it I couldn’t get to installation, and I tried to install Win, but couldn’ t boot to instalation.
But when I finished setup of SUSE, I tried it for the first time. I liked some features of this OS, but as I’ m not used to it yet, I tried to install Win7, but didnt manage to get into setup. I changed settings in bios so it boots cd/dvd first, but it just didnt recognize the installation or what.
So, how can I install Win on a computer that has suse as main OS? I will appreciate your help.

Your system will have SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop on it, most likely,
which is different from openSUSE.
But for the purposes of installing Windows on the system, it’s not going
to be /that/ different.
What you basically need to do is resize the partitions that SLED is
installed on and then run the Windows installer. You will then /
probably/ also need to re-run the grub setup for SLED in order to get it
to dual boot (Windows famously doesn’t play nicely with other operating
systems on the drive - it’s usually recommended to install it first).

Maybe that machine has secure boot enabled??? I don’t think you can install Win7 on a secured UEFI machine. It should install if secure boot is disabled.
It may help if you would show us (using code tags) the output of
fdisk -l
note that is a lower case L not a one
and if you are going to keep “SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop”
you NEED to buy the required support contract
https://www.suse.com/products/desktop/
– you might have a 1 year license wit hthe laptop
https://www.suse.com/products/desktop/how-to-buy/
and update it to
SELD 11 service pack 3
‘SELD 11 sp3’ is NOT a free OS
‘OpenSUSE 12.3’ IS a free OS
Win7 will also want to be installed on the first partition of the drive
and use the MBR
SELD is there now
there is and will be basically a “WAR” with Microsoft
and i have found that "Not playing " makes my life WAY better and less stressful
so
I let Microsoft windows7 have the MBR
and the first partition on the First hard drive
install GRUB on the first LINUX partition
and set THAT partition as the one to boot from
win 7 is happy
suse and scientificLinux boot just fine
and my life is … – I am NOT pulling hair out because of MS .

He bought an HP with SLES included, and I understand that HP has their
own type of contract - similar to HP bought with Windows. AFAIK, there
is an HP guy that participates in the SLES forums, not here. He should know.
It is not clear to me whether the OP wants to double boot Linux and
Windows, or to replace Linux with Windows. The procedure is different.
In the later case, IMO he should have bought a computer with Windows
installed. Easier and probably cheaper.

Hi
This is incorrect, SLED and SLES are free to download, an eval license
gives you access to 60 days of free updates (when first activated…
) You pay for access to updates with basic support and pay extra for
additional support as you require.
With the HP systems, you buy either a 1 or 3 year update support
contract on purchase AFAIK. Since you pay for updates even if the
system is at say SP1, upon activation you would have access to SP3 to
update to and any other release that come out during the systems
activation period…
The other thing with HP systems is they add some additional HP update
repositories for things like wireless, bluetooth etc customized for
those systems. When installing openSUSE one needs to locate some of the
drivers that are not part of the mainline kernels, eg broadcom-wl

Hi
He does actually post here since he runs openSUSE as well,
it’s user Arnaudk93.

Highly unlikely it has secure boot enabled - it shipped with SLED
installed on it.

how do I resize those partitions?
gogalthorp](https://forums.opensuse.org/members/gogalthorp.html) - secure boot is disabled
](https://forums.opensuse.org/members/robin_listas.html)
robin_listas](https://forums.opensuse.org/members/robin_listas.html) - yes, SLES was included. I would like to replace Linux with windows for now. When I bought this laptop I didn’t thought it will be that hard to install win on this machine. But buying with Win already on it would’t be cheaper.
but what is the reason why I now can’t run Win installer as you could do on machine that had Windows on it.

Hi
If you boot from the Windows 7 DVD, then when you get to/past the
install now part , select the ‘custom’ install. It will start the disk
partitioner. Then delete all the partitions and hit ‘next’. Windows
will take care of the hard drive configuration to install windows.
You will also need to visit the HP support site to download the
windows drivers.
NOTE: this will wipe all the SLE recovery partition etc
from the system. As long as you have the HP registration code for SLED
saved, then downloading the media from http://www.suse.com will enable
a SLED install if you get the urge. Using the HP registration code to
activate the system will also add the HP online repositories.

Wouldn’t it be better to return the computer and exchange for one with
Windows? He would get some kind of support. The computer must be still new.
Actually, that’s what I have: a Compaq (aka HP) with Windows installed
on which I also installed Linux. Ie, a double boot machine.

Ah, you refer to the HP chap. I did not know his name.
I misunderstood your post.
So he also uses openSUSE? Interesting.
It is nice to see people from companies getting involved.

Right.
(I actually considered buying an HP computer with Linux, but I could not
find any here (Spain) - so I bought one with Windows instead).

Then another similar model?
You’d get not only windows installed, but also the proper drivers, a
recovery partition, and updates for those drivers.
If this model is only provided with Linux, you will not get the Windows
drivers, if there is any special one needed.

Hi
When you power on the system, press the F9 key will take you to the
boot menu and select the dvd to boot from.
Or do you see something like “Boot from EFI” in the menu list? If so,
select this, browse to the DVD (probably second in the list), then EFI,
then look for bootx64.efi. Select that and press enter.

I would strongly having a rescue disk, because of a high chance of the MBR being corrupted during your installs.
I recommend and have used this one.
