suse on compaq tc1000

I tried to boot the Suse live cd on a Compaq TC1000 tablet pc last night. Just wanted to see if it would load. It has an external cd rom. It booted to the cd to the menu and selected boot the os option not install.

It gave me the splash screen but even after an hour the system never came up. the cd stopped spinning and it just sat there.

has anyone ever tried to load suse on a tc1000 tablet pc? I dont care if I lose the tablet functions. I just want it for email on the road etc. xp is a dog on a 900mhz processor it has.

I have Dell latitude with external CD-ROM . OpenSUSE 10.3 didn’t want to boot , but openSUSE 11.0 booted witohout no problems. Which version do you have?

suse 11 the latest from the site. I am installing it now on a DT system and seems to be going fine for now. So I know the media is good.

anyone else try this? I still cannot get it to load.

I tried Opensolaris, redhat ubuntu suse etc.

Possibly some help here? TabletPCs - openSUSE or here? User:Dkukawka - openSUSE.

However, from your description it sounds like the CD may not being seen by the kernel or possibly it is encountering another problem with the hardware and/or drivers. That you tried other distros with the same result also suggests this. Try adding this to the Boot Options below:

edd=off

And if that doesn’t work, try this:

acpi=off apm=off nolapic noapic pci=nomsi

Also, press Escape to drop the splash screen to text (or choose the Text install option under F3); you may see the specific error.

not sure what you mean or how to enter those commands. I dont get a command line install option.

i see
boot suse
boot suse failsafe
boot hard disk

and i think test cd but cannot remember.

On both the Live-CD and the DVD on the first (boot) screen, there is a data entry line below titled “Boot Options”. That is where you type the above.

I was reading the link you posted for the tablet pc.

From what I am a reading its hard to determine if i use the regular suse cd image or there is a specific tablet pc image to download.

If there is a specific image… I looked here
Index of /repositories/home:/dkukawka/openSUSE_11.0

I am not sure how to tell which one i am looking for.

Sorry, I just don’t know. I’ve no experience in this area. I looked at that repo and saw a number of different kernels, so that may be important. My only suggestion would be to take him up on his offer:

If you need some help to get you Tablet PC running feel free to ask me.

I must have missed that quote. Who posted that? I dont see it in the history of this posting. I would ask him.

The invite is here: Dkukawka - openSUSE. His contact info is at bottom of page. He is a Novell developer.

Afterthought: Try installing in “text mode”, then following installation rebooting into runlevel 3 (just the number 3 in the Boot Options on the menu), logging in, switching to root (the “su” command, without quotes), and then run sax2 - there is an option there for Tablet gui configuration. (Of course, if you need something special in the kernel in order to recognize the hardware, that’s a different matter - Danny may be of help on that.)

I appreciate the info . I dont remember seeing an option to boot text mode but may be its in the bottom menus not the ones in the middle of the screen. Ill have to look at it tonight when I get home.

Thanx again for the info. Ill keep you posted.

question?
Are you talking when I am running off the live cd?
I have no os on the disk now

Text mode is only on the DVD . . . I should have caught this before - it’s conceivable that you may need to use the DVD instead.

no can do i dont have a dvd for this machine. :X

I’m out of my element . . . suggest contacting Danny per his invitation.

thank you for the info you did provide. I have sent him an email. Wait and see. Ill post back when I know more.

i never got a replay back and 2 of the 3 email addr bounced. oh well. back to windows i guess
