(SUSE NOOB) Sound isn´t working, everything is wierd!

OK,

So I sat down at my laptop and the sound doesn´t want to work!
In “Sound” I can get it to do the test - Left speaker / Right speaker"
when I open a mp3 in Banshee the timer runs way fast - like crazy! but no sound.
Youtube vids run at super fast speed without sound…

any Ideas how I can fix this?

another funny thing that happened way back is that the laptop speaker doesn´t play sound, one day it just quit and I have to use external speakers. (no idea if this is related?)

When media players play real fast it most often means you have not yet installed all of the required codecs. I highly recommend you read the following information:

Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide

Thank You,

Thanks Daniel,

as I said, yesterday it was working fine, today the system came down like a house of cards…

I con´t remember what I installed half a year ago… (thanks again for the help I got back then :smiley: ) …how do I see what I have and what I still need?

I have a script that can be used to determine if you have the right codecs loaded that you can find here:

MMCHECK - Version 2.35 - Check Your Multimedia in 16 Steps - Bash Script File - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

Thank You,

I saved the file to /home/till/bin

then I opened the term and nothing happened…

till@linux-0ufc:~> chmod +x ~/bin/mmcheck
till@linux-0ufc:~> mmcheck
If ‘mmcheck’ is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
cnf mmcheck
till@linux-0ufc:~>

sry

Open Up a terminal session and copy and paste in the following three commands, One at a time.

rm ~/bin/mmcheck

wget -nc http://paste.opensuse.org/view/download/77258086 -O ~/bin/mmcheck

chmod +x ~/bin/mmcheck

Now the first command is only needed if you actually got a file called mmcheck in your ~/bin folder and the wget command would fail then, but running it does nothing bad if it finds nothing to remove. Again, run these three commands, one at a time, copy each one from here and paste it on the command line of your terminal session. When done, you should be able to just type in mmcheck in terminal and the program will start-up for you.

Thank You,

Like this?

the banshee time counter is still running like crazy, and I have no sound.

I just ran mmcheck - option 1.

mmcheck told me “Dependencies of all installed packages are satisfied.”

Banshee´s timer is still running at crazy speed, and there is no sound. Will try a reset now.

still no change…

discrepancies they will be displayed. The format of the output is a string

the file name. Each of the 8 characters denotes the result of a comparison
of one attribute of the file to the value of that attribute recorded in the
RPM database. A single . (period) means the test passed. The following

Command: rpm -qa --queryformat '%{NAME} -> %{VENDOR}

If you have installed libdvdcss from openSUSE, you do not need libdvdcss
from VideoLAN. So having no files from VideoLAN is OK, but if you do, it
should only be the package libdvdcss. In the future we suggest that you
switch to using only openSUSE and to remove the VideoLAN Repository.
Only openSUSE 11.3 is supported at: http://opensuse-guide.org/repo/11.3/

libdvdnav4-4.1.3-11.1-i586 -> openSUSE
libdvdcss2-1.2.10-2.pm.3.1-i586 -> http://packman.links2linux.de

You should expect to have 4 libdvd* packages installed, 1 from Packman.

----------------> libdvdread4 <----------- from the openSUSE Repository.
----------------> libdvdnav4 <------------ from the openSUSE Repository.

You can expect to install 2 ---> mplayer2 <-- packages installed from Packman.
----------------> mplayer2 <--------------------- from the Packman Repository.

Check for MPLayer:

Command: rpm --query --queryformat '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}-%{ARCH} -> %{VENDOR}

Command: rpm --verify --query --all 'libav*' 'libpostproc*' 'libswscale*' '*xvid*' '*ffmpeg*' '*libmad*' 'sox'

If everything verified properly there will be no output. If there are any
discrepancies they will be displayed. The format of the output is a string
of 8 characters, a possible 'c' denoting a configuration file, and then
the file name. Each of the 8 characters denotes the result of a comparison
of one attribute of the file to the value of that attribute recorded in the
RPM database. A single . (period) means the test passed. The following
characters denote failure of certain tests:

     5 -- MD5 checksum
     S -- File size
     L -- Symbolic link
     T -- File modification time
     D -- Device
     U -- User
     G -- Group
     M -- Mode (includes permissions and file type)
     ? -- Unreadable file

  Applications that are not installed will produce no
  error message here, should the program be missing!

Well, the output shows that you have work to do.

yup, problem is I don´t know what half of the stuff means…
I´m lost as a little lost baby on a deserted mountain with a pack of hungry hyenas approaching.

the system was up and running for half a year without any problems, I don´t even know what happened to make it go all pear shaped?
no new installs or fiddling with a running system

o.O

Well, you should be asking this in the multimedia forum, and I’m not that
expert in multimedia. IMO, the script shows that you have several packages
from the wrong repo, so that you have to install them.

I think there is a sticky in the MM forum explaining what you usually have
to do.

Hmmmm… OK, thanks.

Any Idea what I could try before I head over in that direction?

as I said, I realy have no Idea where the problem could lie, I just don´t.
