Trying to install OpenSuse 11.2 on a machine which has run version 10.3 for ages. I am installing to completely separate hard disk drives from the existing Suse. Installation is from a DVD burned from a successful download.
All goes well until suddenly the whole thing freezes, mouse as well. This has happened twice. The first time it stopped with 532 packages still to install. The second tim it had installed all packages, and the froze at
“Installing kernel module dependencies” 53 percent, and
“Save configuration” 90 percent.
Each time I was installing to a different, unused, hard disk.
Since no error messages come up I am at a loss to understand how to get past this problem, and really do need help.
does the machine meet the specifications for 11.2 (which are greater
than for 10.3)?
Pentium* III 500 MHz or higher processor (Pentium 4 2.4 GHz or
higher or any AMD64 for Intel* EM64T processor recommended)
512 MB physical RAM (1 GB recommended)
3 GB available disk space (more recommended)
800 x 600 display resolution (1024 x 768 or higher recommended)
are you sure you are not running out of disk space? (sorry, i know you
are probably have plenty of room, but what partitioning scheme did you
elect to use…that is: is /tmp on its own partition and is it REALLY
REALLY big?)
have you looked at the resulting log files to see if you can figure
out why it is ‘freezing’? by ‘freeze’ do you mean the hard drive light
does not flicker or is on constantly? by freeze do you mean you can
no longer hear the fans turning? by freeze, do you mean you can not
press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and drop to a terminal?
The only time I have had an install seriously crash at different stages was on a laptop, the drivers needed for the cooling fan to run were not loaded for the install routine.
So the CPU would overheat.
In this case I setup a domestic fan beneath the laptop, once the install had completed the correct drivers were loaded, and all was well.
Please notice DenvedD’s remarks. You claim a succesful download, did you check the md5sum? Then, before installing, did you perform the Media Check? A 100% correct download does not guarantee a good install CD/DVD. Burn the iso at lowest speed possible. But do check the burnt medium, AFAICT this is caused by corrupted install media.

I agree, this is far more likely than the situation I mention above.
Another less likely possiblility, but credible still, is related to the question of DenverD, which is: how old is this PC ?
I recall when I updated my mother’s rather old PC from openSUSE-10.2 to 11.1 a couple of years back, I had a problem where the burned CD was perfect, but her CD reader had deteriorated to the point where it could no longer read an installation CD without multiple errors. I spent a silly amount of time trying to figure out why the PC kept failing with an openSUSE-11.1 install … At a certain point I almost gave up, and decided to re-install 10.2. But when I tried to re-install 10.2 and that failed, it suddently dawned on me her PC had a difficult to detect hardware problem ! I purchased a cheap CD reader to replace the failing CD reader (which worked partly, but not adequately), I plugged it in the new CD reader (replacing the old reader) and the installation problem disappeared! … Life was wonderful again.
