If running Yast and SoftwareManage or Update and the enabled repos are the exact standard 3 (oss, non-oss, update), I have a terminal up and type ‘netstat -taun’ I find that IPs other than opensue.org (195.135.221.130) show up.
If I have a different favoured repo enabled alone and know its IP , again I can see extra IPs appearing.
OK, doing a whois on them mostly shows what could be a mirror site - usually universities or actual mirrors - but others just appear under an ISP or provider “umbrella” so in fact I don’t know what it is.
And sometimes I don’t like the look of the name! IP-aranoia!!!
Why do these others show up? Is the code on the server at the chosen repo set up to offload to mirrors if its own load gets high?

You are redirected automatically to a mirror near to you (if the logic works) - actually, using
metalinks technology, the download could happen from several mirrors at the same time. You need not
worry about security, as the “metadata” is downloaded directly from the main server, with content
signed, so that if you get a, say, trojaned rpm from one of the mirrors, the signature would not
match and the installation would abort.
It is usually best if you use the opensuse redirectors. Only in case when it fails for you giving a
wrong or broken mirror it is advisable to manually configure another mirror, but in this case you
should report the error so that the bad mirror is removed from the list.

thanks! this is really good information which i do not think i’ve seen
in these fora before (of course, maybe i missed it)…
but, i have a question: what is the best way to make the report you
suggest?
and, probably language specific, but will the error include words like
those you use “wrong or broken mirror”

Dunno. I’m new here, you know

Good question.
Mail list? >:-P
joking. But the thing is, the chap that maintains the redirector reads the mail lists sometimes
(Peter Poeml?). I don’t know if a formal method for reporting mirror problems does exist yet. The
wiki would say so somewhere.

No, you use your crystal ball to get that data - be sure to shop for a good one :-p
(half-kidding)
It is in one of the Fates, that zypper reports enough info to detect/report bad mirrors. I’m not
sure if 11.3 does it. If you search for Peter’s messages about redirector problems you might learn
tricks to find out those problems and culprits.
