Has anyone manged to actually get it working? Gnome and KDE are both rumored to be able to access network libraries of content. Under KDE I have Dolphin to the point it has the option to attempt browisng “upnp-ms” It doesn’t ever find the server though. Ditto for Amarok. Plugin enabled, it has the option under add media and… nothing. So close, but it just can’t find the server.
might help https://forums.opensuse.org/blogs/knurpht/playing-media-content-opensuse-dlna-smart-tv-119/
And it will allways be a nice gesture to your potential helpers when you at least tell which version of openSUSE (not SuSE) you use.
That one is for the server side. It allows to share to dlna clients, like smart tv’s.
XBMC is good for both client and server side. It sees not only dlna/upnp but also NFS, Samba etc. Mind, your tv is not a dlna server.
Oops. Shame on me. I am on the latest - (not tumbleweed though) openSUSE 12.3 and have been hunting for anything that works on the past 3 releases so far. Added the kio slave for upnp but it still seems to be just missing something.
You are not the only one. I too have now moved to 12.3 but have been looking for a reliable client for a couple of years.
My multimedia is served from NAS by Twonky and music by minimserver. With a reasonably sized classical collection I need the comprehensive trees these servers offer for a common searching experience across all my renderers and wanted the same on PC. XBMC works after a fashion but is not perfect. I spent some time on the KDE forums trying to get Amarok UPnP to work but didn’t succeed. That was a while ago so there may have been developments. I suggest you ask there where you can see there also my own somewhat ignorant attempts. We need a serious coder to take an interest. Good luck. Please share if you succeed.

VLC can function as a DLNA client. Start VLC, View Playlist and then
select Local Network | Universal Plug n Play. It spots all servers
quickly enough but takes a couple of minutes before it retrieves the
full list of files from my Serviio server
I realise that’s not native but does at least work
Thanks

Thanks for the reply, Paul. Been continuing to try everything I read and even VLC isn’t delivering. Maddening that even my 2-year old android phone can see and use the DLNC server, but the latest OpenSuSE can’t.
I am still searching for a KDE solution to get DLNA/UPNP playback working. Gnome, with the Grilo plugin gives us UPNP in Totem and Rhythmbox. A clean Gnome install had working support once the plugin is enabled. Add the additional multimedia support and everything is great.
Hunt for the same in KDE continues…
Just an update bump for the new version. OpenSUSE 13.1 installed clean with Gnome desktop. Grilo is broken. Can see the DLNA server, but does not display directory hierarchy correctly. Looks like a step backwards.
Yes I recently updated to 13.1 from 12.3 and went from rhtymbox working with DLNA to not working.
the strange thing is if you install grilo tools, and start the grilo test ui it shows all the shares, so it must be something with Rhythmbox itself.
Here is an easy way:
- Install djmount from http://software.opensuse.org/package/djmount?search_term=djmount
- Create a dlna/upnp folder:
su
cd /media
mkdir upnp
chmod 777 upnp
modprobe fuse
djmount -o allow_other /media/upnp
Now you can use your file browser (Dolphin) to switch in this folder. Your dlna servers will display now as sub folders. Have fun…
Thank you, just what i was looking for.

This appliy to 13.2 as well?
Probably but if it does not work for you start a new thread with the details of the problem
Ok, not sure if that DJMount is working for 13.2, but the real goal here was to get UPNP/DLNA working natively in KDE apps like Amarok and Kaffiene.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
