Hello people,
we just migrated with one PC from Ubuntu and 64studio to SuSE because of some hardware issues and now we are wondering: do packages and programs need special releases for SuSE or not? Can we install things like Campcaster, Audacious, Ardour, etc also in SuSE? They don’t seem to pop up in YaST, but will the rpm’s work?

its a superb search engine for applications pre-compiled as rpms.
I note Audacious and Ardour have hits from there, … but not Campcaster.
Noting you just migrated from Ubuntu and 64studio, it might help save you some time if you became more familiar with openSUSE concepts:

most of that page will be " old hat " to you, but its possible some of the more unique openSUSE aspects will be clear.
Reference multimedia, … when it comes to proprietary codecs and drivers (which means a large % of all multimedia) Novell/SuSE-GmbH generally speaking does not support such codecs/drivers. But there are 3rd party sites that do. By far the biggest site for 3rd party packaged applications for openSUSE is the “Packman site”:

To simplify your installation of software, I recommend you setup your software repositories with 4 (and ONLY 4) repositories: OSS, NON-OSS, Update and Packman. There is guidance on how to do that here:

While there are many other repositories, my view is they can and should be only added on an as-required basis, and then immediately removed afterward. Once you become familiar with “zypper” (command line software manager), you can add and remove a repository in seconds with something like:
To add a repos: zypper ar < repos-url > arbitrary-repos-name
To remove a repos: zypper rr < repos-url >
